With 6.4 Million users, Google Maps mobile is the most used mobile app in the UK according to a survey conducted by ComScore and GSMA, a mobile Industry institute, Guardian tells us.
People also used Yahoo Weather, which came in the second place with 3.6 Million users, nearly as half as Google Maps and 0.1 Million more than the Facebook App which had 3.5 million users.
The information comes from comScore and the GSMA's Mobile Media Metrics partnership and is being published in connection with IAB Engage for Mobile conference in London. Mobile Media Metrics has been busy since February 2010, providing mobile performance data to the UK's public and industries.
The difference between the top two apps and the others is that Google Maps (iPhone and Android) and Yahoo Weather (iPhone) are both preloaded apps. If you are wondering where is the Angry Birds, it is not there because it is not a connected app. Connected Apps are defined as apps that transmit data over the carriers network.

Google Mobile Search : Google Places : Getting To The Right Place At Right Time.

Living, studying and working in SF bay area has it's peaks. Everything is just a few miles or minutes away from where I live. I use Google Search and Google Maps, extensively as I am a bit clueless with driving directions. You know the people you have to shout "the other left". Yes. Google always get me there and back home.
Sometimes we want to get together and put finishing touches on a project after hashing it out at the office. Or sometimes walk out of the campus library, closer to mid night, looking for a snack.
So we do a search, map the place out and arrive at the destination, only to find it is closed! Who has time to check opening and closing times, when your brains are elsewhere. Now you can avoid those "Oh Man" instances, thanks to Google Places, Google Mobile Search.
Now you can narrow down your local searches to show businesses "Open Now".

Once you are done and in a mind to, you can further dig down by filtering on star ratings, the distance etc.
Another feature, I like is the addition of the photos, it makes it easier for me to locate the place, even if it is on the "other left" side of the road.

We had a major fire in San Bruno, near San Francisco due to rapture of a natural gas line. I just took some clothes and provisions today as many residents were left with their clothes on the back. I stayed in the area briefly a while ago.

San Bruno City Manager requests residents *please* check in via the Emergency Hotline (650) 616-7180 or in person at Veteran's Rec Center on City Park Way. The Red Cross support number for those in need is (888) 443-5722.

The most severely damaged areas reported by officials are the 1600 and 1700 blocks of Claremont Drive, the 900 block of Glenview Drive, the 1700 block of Earl Avenue, the 1100 block of Fairmont Drive and the 2700 block of Concord Way.

Helping And Staying In Touch WIth Devastated Haiti

We all have seen the horrors of the Haitian earthquake disaster and also the joys of rescues by various people. This morning I saw an infant being rescued after 6 days under rubble. There were many other people who saw happy endings and many more who encountered sad unbearable endings. As human beings, we all need to see that those children who are now seeking help get sheltered and fed. Personally I have made my contribution and I did it from my heart, without wondering or hesitating. If you have not done so, I urge you to have a second look.
If you wonder where your donations are going Oxfam and American Red Cross are uploading videos of their work in Haiti, letting you see how exactly the donations work on site.
There are many other organizations that work with public to support Haitians in this hour of need and please make sure that the organization you are donating is a legitimate one.
On the technology side, people have utilized every little bit of bandwidth and capacity to keep the world alerted to the state of Haiti.
U.S. Department of State and Google created an online People Finder gadget to find missing people in three languages English, French and Creole.;

Google Voice is offering free calls to Haiti for next two weeks. If you do not have an account you can request one at Google Voice.
Google Maps is also doing wonders by providing information about the area such as before and after images with the help of Geoeye's imagery.
The imagery is available via Google's earthquake response website.
If you are into maps, Google has made Haiti Map Maker data publicly available for download for non-commercial use and attribution.
