SIP Routing, A Webinar By OpensSIPS

Routing in SIP
We here are big fans of OpenSIPS (Formally OpenSER). In fact it is our favorite SIP engine. We have been involved with this SIP Server ever since it forked from SER.
The OpenSIPS is very capable SIP engine and is capable of handling large volumes of users and traffic. But we tend to make mistakes due to lack of understanding and the OpenSIPS have steped in to help us all. The second in series of webinars will be presented this month.
(If you need further information on OpenSIPS, you can visit OpenSIPS website and There is also a Recorded webinar, Introduction to OpenSIPS. Links all at the end).

Next Webinar;

SIP Security, A New Book From Wiley

SIP and SIP Security
The big guns at Fraunhofer Institute Fokus, who brought us the SIP Express Router (SER), has written a very good book on SIP Security.
Authors, Dr. Dorgham Sisalem, Dr. John Floroiu, Jiri Kuthan, Ulrich Abend, and Prof. Henning Schulzrinne are pioneers in SIP technology and have vested interest and knowledge of the subject SIP and SIP Security. If you need further assuarence, you can read a forward by security guru Phil Zimmerman on the site which is linked below.
SIP Accounts are used by many now for day to day communications and all major IP Telephony and VoIP carriers are deploying or already have deployed SIP Back Bones. I learned my SIP from SER, when most people were wondering what VoIP was.
I cant comment much on the book itself as I have not read it yet but I will assure you, it is something you need to have near by, if you are involved in Communications.
The authors have a website to provide information on the book.

You can read an excerpt of the book here.

OpenSIPS 1.4.0 is released.

Update: OpenSIPS will be present at ClueCOn Telephony Conference. So lookout for them if you are at the conference. I will.

As you may have already read, I just wrote about OpenSER chnaging the name and the New fork of OpernSER, OpenSIPS. Well you don't have to wait a lot to see the OpenSIPS! They have just released the OpenSIPS 1.4.
The OpenSER/Kamailio was planing to release their what ever 1.4 version of august 7th. But I guess the OpenSIPS were faster. I think I will try it on one of my virtual machines this weekend. According to OpenSIPS site, the release incorporates new functionalities like
  • dialog profiling extension
  • local route for internally generated requests
  • dial plan / translation module
  • general NAT traversal module (for non-invite signalling)
  • peering and rate limit (traffic shaping) modules

, enhancements like:

  • SRV load balancing (based on weights)
  • nonce re-usage verification (safer authentication)

and bug fixing - code, specs and functionality bugs.

The full Changelog is available here.

To get the OpenSIPS 1.4.0 version, see the Downloads page.

OpenSER Changes Name to Kamailio and gives Birth To OpenSIPS!

I Just got a book on OpenSER from RavenII for reading and to write a review. I have been a fan of OpenSER since it began. Actually I was all over Iptel's SER befor that and when all the developers, well almost all, left to start OpenSER, I too followed.
Since then we have collectively deployed OpenSER in various in Public and private installations. Mostly with combination of Asterisk and Asterisk hardware from Digium (Asterisk being the gateway for OpenSER). In the open source SIP world, besides SER, and OpenSER, there are hardly any other that is useful to us. Yes we have used a few other stacks but non in the level on OpenSER.
Now if you remember, SER (I am still loyal to SER for starting SIP Revolution) was forked to create OpenSER and since OpenSER became Kamailio (how do you pronounce that? Just imagine my plight! Hello customer I am here to service OpenS.. err Kamailio! What? you are doing what??) I think I might stick with OpenSIPS! (if it is as good or better than OpenSER) at least my customers will not hear the difference, OpenSER <-> OpenSIPS OpenSIPS is a fork of OpenSER/Kamailio. If you have not read, don't forget to read OpenSer VS SER!
Now the book, which was published by Packt, OpenSER Book will be reviewed here, unless the publishers change the name!
