SIPFoundry's sipxecs source tree is getting a make over making it very easy to develop and build sipexecs project. If you have dived into the code base, you know there are Java and Ruby code, requiring Ant and Rake to build the project among other stuff.
According to a post on the SIPFoundry projects blog, autoconf  and automake going to make lives much easier, making java and ruby projects were an order of magnitude cleaner, smaller, faster and more flexible.

Cedarville College, a 3200 students home in Ohio has implemented sipXecs Open Communications to provide Unified Communications experience within the campus environment.
In addition to providing faculty, students, administrative and support staff multiple ways of interaction, the college will also serve in the sipXecs Policy Committee and sipXecs Technical Committee providing valuable input regarding education market for the eZuce products, through the SIPfoundry Higher Education Program .

"Our campus selected sipXecs because we wanted to invest in a product that allowed us to save money while facilitating collaboration with our peers. We are confident that this program will enhance our ability to communicate and is well suited to meet the learning, research and academic needs of our university and others. We are especially pleased to be involved in a project with significant user-community involvement." said David Rotman, Associate VP for Technology CIO, Cedarville College regarding the project and the involvement.

At the completion of the project, the campus would have it's Nortel Meridian - 81C PBX replaced with sipXecs supporting more than 1200 nodes.

eZuce Presents An Open Source Enterprise Level Unified Communications Solution

eZuce, a company formed by the creators of SIPFoundry, Dr. Martin Steinmann and Jerry Stabile, announced a enterprise grade UC solution, last month. Since I was away from blogging for almost a month, I missed the opportunity to present them to my readers.
SIPFoundry was one of my favorite projects and in fact my first self developed SIP Client to use with such services like free SIP Accounts, came from the sipXphone, a part of the project, even before the SIPFoundry / Pingtel days.
The project changed hands a few times but lived on, the community continued to develop the sipX project and I am glad now it is becoming a mainstream product due to eZuce.
Just like the track record of SIPFoundry, the software that eZuce promotes and supports, also have a seven years of development track record.
The solution itself provides opportunity for for companies to replace legacy PBX's and eZuce is placing itself as an alternative or replacement for Microsoft UC. But eZuce supports all the Microsoft's communications products like Outlook and Microsoft Exchange server. They also have a unique position in the role as well. EZuce sales model is completely indirect. They will support for single tier resellers, OEMs, and  Managed Service Providers (MSPs). Partners and end customers working with eZuce benefit from a fully supported product. In current incarnation, eZuce allows partners to offer a fully supported solution with standard SLA to end users, including level 3 support escalations.
The channel partners will also be at ease because, the SIPFoundry products were used by the like of NORTEL and Avaya. SIPFoundry PBX Solution powers the Avaya Software Communication System (SCS). So this startup is well grounded from the start and I am sure will have a greater role in the Unified Communications arena.

Nortel Bankrupt? Bolt Of Signal To Telecomm Market!

Actually it is not bankrupt but the Globe and Mail is reporting that Nortel has filed for bankruptcy protection from its creditors in Delaware. This must be a big shock to Canadians to see one of their iconic corporations go down and surprise to bondholders while shareholders might see their investments wiped out!.
Nortel easily qualified as the Canada's largest company in 2000, with a $366-billion (Canadian) market capitalization and 95,000 employees. But it's fall is also a signal for big telecom giants how the market is playing in these troubled times and to us look carefully into the VoIP Market and the playing field.
Nortel was among the telecommunication equipment suppliers such as Cisco, Alcatel Lucent and now the competition is shrinking.
What will happen to the SIPFoundry now! Thanks also goes for not buying the Asterisk!

Pingtel / SIPfoundry In Nortel's Hands, I Guess Asterisk Was Too Hot!

Why SIPfoundry was a better place for Nortel than Asterisk? Perhaps there might be reasons that you may have thought of. I have worked with SIPfoundry for a long time as well. Actually the SIP Softphone that I have worked on came from SIPFoundry. Now that Pingtel changed hands, a few times to end up in Nortels hand, I hope I continue to see the open source project prosper. SIPfoundry did provide for a niche that we worked on. The first open source conference server we worked on was from SIPfoundry.
