#Patent #LawSuit Against #Skype http://snapvoip.blogspot.com/
Just as Skype is picking up pieces from the recent massive Skype service outage, (Perhaps leading more people are looking to uninstall Skype, what the use of it if you could not send that lovely X-MAS message.), a company Gradient Enterprises, known to be a patent troll has filled a patent infringing suit against Skype in US courts.
The trolls are basically telling that they invented the network monitoring to which USPTO in it's wisdom granted the patent this year (the patent was filed in 2004). The U.S. patent no. 7,669,207, “METHOD FOR DETECTING, REPORTING AND RESPONDING TO NETWORK NODE-LEVEL EVENTS AND A SYSTEM THEREOF” Hopefully something good will come out of this law suite, for all of us.
The skype supernode network, which we have been advising and telling "how to be or not to be a Skype Supernode", so Skype need to be a supernode and get it's lawyer gears up and fight.

C2 VoIP Patent Fails In Obviousness Test., Says USPTO
#EFF C2 VoIP Patent Fails In Obviousness Test.http://snapvoip.blogspot.com/
In its war against worst patents, EFF has scored a minor but very important victory against one of the top ten worst patents in EFF’s Patent Busting Project,, USPTO has agreed that C2 Patent in question, “Method and Apparatus for Implementing a Computer Network/Internet Telephone System,” does not pass the obviousness test.
This is not a final decision by USPTO as it needs to wait for C2 response and make an argument in support of it's patent. VoIP Patents

Why Nokia Sueing Apple? Explained.
Nokia Sue Apple snapvoip.blogspot.com
The patent infringement case in which Nokia is seeking monies from Apple for GSM, UMTS (3G) and WiFi patents.engadget went on a digging safari to find out facta and came out with fact to show us it is a simple case of Nokia asking what is due from Apple. But more I read these patent cases, more I get confused. Why are we making standards based on patents? even if "fair, reasonable, and non-discriminatory" terms (or FRAND terms) are in place to stop companies like Nokia from gauging the rest of the world who ever makes a cell phone.
But I guess Apple would do the same if they owned the patent :).
So read and learn more about how these patents and law suits work.

Federal Appeals Court Sides With Skype On Patent Case By Acacia Research's Peer Communications.
VoIP Patents snapvoip.blogspot.com/
The federal appeals court has upheld a lower court’s decision to dismiss patent claims against Skype related to uniform network technology filed by Peer Communications, a subsidiary of Acacia Research Corporation,.
Acacia Research’s subsidiaries acquire, develop, license and enforce patents.I call these firms Patent Trolls
They filed the patent case in August 2006 in U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Texas. The court ruled in favor of Skype and then the case then went on to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit.
Hope skype will have same results with othe Skype law suits.

Vonage Mobile Application On The Way?
http://snapvoip.blogspot.com/
According to FierceVoIP, Vonage is seeing itself in the mirror and planing to clean up itself. I would guess by now Vonage should be a clean act but according to it's CEO, they have ways to go. From customer acquisition to customer support and now aiming at the mobile market with an moblie Vonage application.
We have Vonage service in one of our satellite offices and everyone who uses it (for customer support for our products) are pretty happy with the service. I think it is time Vonage lifts its head now that all those Verizon court cases and VoIP patent issues are far behind them and all but wide open market in front.

COX Does Not Violate Verizon Patents! Court Rules.
COX Verizon
Much to the surprise of VoIP world, court (jury) has sided with COX and ruled that COX does not violate Verizon patents that I feel should not have been awarded in the first place. Verizon is in a suing spree targeting VoIP providers. I am wondering why these patents have not been challenged yet, properly.
According to Broadcasting Cable;
a Virginia Court has ruled that it did not violate Verizon's Voice Over Internet Protocol (VoIP) patents.

a Virginia Court has ruled that it did not violate Verizon's Voice Over Internet Protocol (VoIP) patents.
"The jury found that Cox was not infringing any of Verizon’s Voice-Over-Internet-Protocol telephone patents at issue in the case," said Cox in a statement circulated by the company's lead law firm on the case, Kirkpatrick Stockton.
These are the same patents which Verizon took Vonage to court forcing Vonage to settle with Verizon. Did it acted too soon? But it is also expected for Verizon to file an appeal and chase after other VoIP providers like Comcast and Time Warner. From Broadcasting Cable via Techdirt.
