A Usability Test : Android VS iOS, Android Wins

Android VS iOS http://snapvoip.blogspot.com/

I came across a very nice article about usability test conducted to find out if iOS or Android got what it takes to be useful in day to day use. The test was conducted by Jacob who is usability geek at IntuitionHQ.com has conducted a usability test to determine if all the shouts about Android being sub par to iOS usability experience.
The author himself is a iOS user and have not used an Android device. So not believing hyped up or biased reports, he conducted a test using two particular question types, an A/B test and a preference test.
The A/B test, the test taker is presented with either image A or B (but not both) to test the interaction;
"When looking at the results you get a fair comparison between A and B, and thus have a fair idea of how the two different designs or interfaces compare. It’s easy to judge which interface is the winner if it takes users a lot longer to interact with one than the other, or if they frequently select the wrong location or button for a simple task."
The preference test on the other hand the test taker gets two images, designed or interfaces, side by side. But Jacob, in this test has obscured the status bar to avoid test takers from selecting personal or preconceived preferences.

The test and results;
"For each of the apps in the test, I tried to think of a very simple, common task that people might be trying to perform. If it works out that people take roughly the same amount of time to complete each task, or it works out that there is a huge difference between the two platforms or even from app to app, then we can start to form some judgments about what is going right or wrong, and which platform is more or less usable"

The final result is Android 9 and iOS 7.5. as of now.(Hooray, I use both Android and iOS devices)

You need to visit the post by Jacob to see the results and even take the test and add your your results tot he test. So it might be better to take the test before you read the article. I did.

Take the test yourself

Android Leads iOS in Ad Impressions, Millennial Madia.

Top 10 Countries By Mobile Ad Impressions.
Android Leads iOS in Ad Impressions http://snapvoip.blogspot.com/
According to the company's monthly report, Android seems to be very impressive and leads that pack. Almost twice as much as the next contender, iOS. (Android has 54% and iOS 28% in the networks Ad impressions). Millenial is the third largest mobile ad network behind Google's AD MOB and Apple's iADs.

But Apple lead the connected device category and device manufacturer category. But at the rate companies like HTC and Samsung are rising, in no time Android will over take Apple in all fronts, at least it points that way.
Here are some facts from the Millennial monthly report (Available to download)
  • Last month we continued to see increased platform and manufacturer diversity – emphasizing the importance of advertising across all platforms. While Android continues to lead iOS as the largest Smartphone OS on our network, iOS outpaced all other operating systems in ad requests with a 47% increase month-over-month.
  • HTC grew 36% in January to claim the number two position in the Top 15 Manufacturers ranking. This growth is tied to the significant number of HTC devices represented in the Top 30 Mobile Device ranking.
  • Apple, the leading device manufacturer on our network, represented 26% of the Top 15 Manufacturers impression share in January, a 24% increase month-over-month. Apple iPod Touch reclaimed the number two position on the Top 30 Mobile Devices ranking in January.
  • Wi-Fi impressions experienced a 21% month-over-month increase. The increase in impression share of Connected Devices month-over-month contributed to the increase in Wi-Fi impressions.
  • Symbian impressions grew significantly in January, increasing 24% month-over-month.

Android Eating Into iOS Share? Android Surging On Mobole Web Consumption.

Android gaining on iOS. http://snapvoip.blogspot.com/
According to a very informative post only comprising of only two graphs, (one of them shown above), on Quantcast blog, Android Mobile Web Consumption is on the rise, while iOS bases such activities are on the decline. Blackberries seem to keep a steady phase at about 10%.
Quantcast is a web/net measurement and analytics company that does wonderful things with what we all do on the net. The numbers do tell so much. Our experience with AT&T, I do not blame the iOS slump. People tend to get tired of waiting for something to show up on iPhone screen.
Also the rising sales of Android based devices are an indicated by the straight and rising graph. The capacity and capabilities of those networks are to be seen. I think in about a year, predicatively, we will have a intersecting lines!
The Apple iOS numbers declined from 67% in May 2010 to 56% in August 2010. This roughly coincides with the two year contacts on those iPhone 3G's running out!Are people abandoning iPhones for AnDROIDs?
Interesting. But remember, in device sales, both are increasing rapidly. The graph is showing the relative position of the share of Mobile Web.
