iOS 4.01 Will Fix The iPhone 4 Antennae Issue?

Will it be able to suspend the phone magically in air? The only way the antennae seem to work, properly.

According to unconfirmed reports, Apple is planing to release a patch to fix iPhone 4's antennae issue. Apple insider reports that there was a discussion on Apple support boards, that was taken down, now, discussed about the new patch.

"The fix is expected to address a issue in iOS 4 related to radio frequency calibration of the baseband. Readers who saw the original forum discussions say that the issue is believed to occur when switching frequencies; because the lag is allegedly not calibrated correctly, it results in the device reporting "no service" rather than switching to the frequency with the best signal to noise ratio." reported Appleinsider

Either if Apple is hiding or not, everyone familiar with the iPhone systems expect an upgrade to the iOS 4. But may be Apple is scared all 1.7 Million iPhone 4 users will clog the system like those 600,000 users pre-order dudes and dudettes.

Come on Steve, it will be 1.7 million happy iPhone users. Or should we follow, "And sometimes an antenna that's not great, but good enough, is good enough.", an antennae expert who already bought an iPhone 4! (I think he is biased :) But I like the guy. So read him already.

The iPhone 4 design has "moved the antenna action from the back of the phone to the sides," but might only improve things if you or Jobs can "suspended magically in air." He also noted due to the design, may actually make things worse when the phone is placed in the user's pocket.

Well, even if I like iPhone 4, I will wait for the iPhone 4.1 next year! I will bash my partners iPhone 4 for tests, developments and such.!

iPhone 4 Jailbreak No : iPhone 4 / iOS 4 Unlock Yes

iPhone 4 Jailbreak iPhone 4 Unlock http://snapvoip.blogspot.com/
There are posts and rumors about iPhone 4 Jailbreak but there is none so far. The jailbreakers are not ready to release even though some have the tools, like Goehot who seem to have a new exploit called “pwned4life” which can jailbreak and unlock all iPhones for life is busy watching World Cup 2010, but the USA is out of the tournament and he might start work on it.
On a discussion over at DIGG, a user explained this very well;
There is no iPhone 4 or 3GS on the new bootrom (meaning a 3GS running 3.1.3 jailbroken with Spirit) JUST YET. Progress has been made, but there is no public jailbreak. The Dev-team has gotten root access using a userland jailbreak method. There is no "the userland jailbreak method," it's a general term.

There is NO RELEASE DATE. We might not see a public release jailbreak any time soon. Could be days, could be weeks. Also can depend on if Apple patches iOS 4 to work on any issues like the antenna/signal issues (possibly Monday, but no one knows for sure.) Releasing a jailbreak now means Apple will probably fix the exploit on the next patch, and since the antenna issue may be serious and quickly fixed, the Dev-team will not waste a jailbreak method and end up having a must-have/quick release patch break it in a few days. through digg user Brak710101
iPhone 4 Unlock is something entirely different, if you read the article "PwnageTool 4.01 Released,",
You know that the iPhone Dev Team already released ultrasn0w 0.93 for unlocking your new iOS 4. Anyone wants could do this by simply adding the "Cydia repo: repo666.ultrasn0w.com". The current version of ultrasn0w will unlock basebands 04.26.08 thru 05.13.04. If your unsure, that means that ultrasn0w unlocks ALL basebands since iPhone OS 3.1. Even more specifically, 04.26.08, 05.11.07, 05.15.01, and 05.13.04. Remember to disable 3G on T-Mobile USA.

So there it is now. But before doing anything, unlocking the iPhone 4 or Jailbreaking the iPhone 4, which might simply break the iPhone 4, wait a little. Apple is certain to release a new fixes soon as they are finding a bunch of bugs and then there is iPhone 4 Antennae issue. Just admire the new phone for a few days and carry your of phone around. Mobile Search, A New Battle Ground?

Mobile Search, A New Battle Ground? http://snapvoip.blogspot.com/
If you are watching Worldcup 2010, you know some of the top teams are already gone and others are struggling. Complacency seem to affect many top players. Is the same phenomenon extending into Mobile Search? Techcrunch think iPhone Apps are changing the face of mobile search, but what about the millions of other phones? do they search via Bing? Google or perhaps Yahoo!
I think Google rules, in search and the search results!

Change Process for the Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) and the Real-time Applications and Infrastructure Area

Abstract

This memo documents a process intended to organize the future    development of the Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) and related work in the Real-time Applications and Infrastructure (RAI) Area.  As the
environments in which SIP is deployed grow more numerous and diverse, modifying or extending SIP in certain ways may threaten the  interoperability and security of the protocol; however, the IETF process must also cater to the realities of existing deployments and serve the needs of the implementers working with SIP.  This document therefore defines the functions of two long-lived working groups in the RAI Area that are, respectively, responsible for the maintenance of the core SIP specifications and the development of new efforts to extend and apply work in this space.  This document obsoletes RFC 3427.

Status of This Memo

This memo documents an Internet Best Current Practice.

This document is a product of the Internet Engineering Task Force  (IETF).  It represents the consensus of the IETF community.  It has received public review and has been approved for publication by the Internet Engineering Steering Group (IESG).  Further information on BCPs is available in Section 2 of RFC 5741.

Vopium Gets A Capital Investment And A Bigger Partner, Raghuvinder Kataria.

Vopium Gets A Capital Investment http://snapvoip.blogspot.com/
When we wrote about Vopium, a Mobile VoIP company, we knew it has promise. So has some big names in the telecommunications industry.
While we are jumping up and down about the new iPhone's Antennae, Vopium is Jumping up for another reason. They have secured a $16.5 investment from  an Indian investor, Raghuvinder Kataria.  Mr. Kataria has with his own investment company invested $16.5 million in the Danish company and has become the majority shareholder of Vopium.
Mr. Kataria is known for his Telecomm investments. Bharti Tele-Ventures is one such company, he invested in and now Bharati Airtel is one of the lagest mobile companies in the world.
Opium is also benefiting fro iPhones popularity and during the last couple of months they have reached 4,000 downloads a day of their iPhone App. Vopium currently have 250,000 users across 49 countries,
Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Kataria said;
”Vopium has developed its own new market. The ground-breaking technology will reach millions of users all over the world in the next few years. Our expectations are reflected by the significant amount of money that we have invested in the company and we expect 10 million Vopium users in a few years. We believe that the market demands an alternative mobile solution to Skype and the fast market penetration of smartphones opens up new and more intelligent ways of communication. Vopium’s solution is unique because it offers the best conversation quality and is easy to use,”
“Vopium is growing every day. Every month we get 30 percent more customers. And this number will grow even more once our international expansion starts rolling. Our biggest markets today are Scandinavia, the UK and Australia, but our product is installed on mobile phones in 49 countries. The capital increase should primarily secure the ongoing growth globally,” added Vopium’s CEO Tanveer Sharif.

iBumper : Apple Acknowledges The Antenna Issue, "You Do NOT Know How To Hold The Iphone 4"

Apple Acknowledges The iPhone 4 Antenna Issue http://snapvoip.blogspot.com/
, "You Do NOT Know How To Hold The iPhone 4!"  is basically what Apple is saying. And the 600,000 whatevers seem to be fine with it! This is a major design flow and Apple should have recalled the iPhone 4. FCC, are you watching the saga? Hope some one among those 600,000 has brains.

"Gripping any phone will result in some attenuation of its antenna performance with certain places being worse than others depending on the placement of the antennas. This is a fact of life for every wireless phone. If you ever experience this on your Phone 4, avoid gripping it in the lower left corner in a way that covers both sides of the black strip in the metal band, or simply use one of many available cases."
I tried many times, with my old iPhone, what ever the way I held it, the signal did not change. So I think Apple is BSing us when it tells that "This is a fact of life for every wireless phone." Can you prove that? Apple. Just take your iPhone original, the iPhone 3G and show us that the way it is held could change reception. I have had many a cell phone and even now I have, but non display the same fault that  iPhone 4 does.
Now I like to know where the next 600,000 comes and will they buy it this known fault? How many will go for Droid X?
Well Now we can definitely say Droid X wins!

Android Market Place Pulls An Apple, Shows Us Remote Application Removal Feature!

Android Security Lead published that the team has removed, two applications, remotely, that did not meet guidelines set by the Android Market Developer Distribution Agreement or Content Policy.
Recently, we became aware of two free applications built by a security researcher for research purposes. These applications intentionally misrepresented their purpose in order to encourage user downloads, but they were not designed to be used maliciously, and did not have permission to access private data — or system resources beyond permission.INTERNET. As the applications were practically useless, most users uninstalled the applications shortly after downloading them.

After the researcher voluntarily removed these applications from Android Market, we decided, per the Android Market Terms of Service, to exercise our remote application removal feature on the remaining installed copies to complete the cleanup.
The remote application removal feature is one of many security controls Android possesses to help protect users from malicious applications and I guess this is a real life test, to make sure that the team has the capability to take necessary action on behalf of users’ safety when needed.
Guess Daddy Rules.

How To Kill An iPhone 4, Just By Holding It!

Oh What Is That? Your Fail points!
How To Kill An iPhone 4 http://snapvoip.blogspot.com/
I still can't stop laughing and smirking at my friend who is holding an iPhone 4 with his finger tips! As per instruction, one finger at the bottom and one per side, avoid those "Steve Jobs' what is that?" joints.
For those people who still does not want to believe that something is wrong with iPhone 4: here is how to kill it.
as per Peter Spheres demo on YouTube;

  1. Disable WiFi
  2. Hold the phone in the 'fingertip grip', observe 4-5 bars of 3G.
  3. Launch TuneIn radio. (Or any streaming service you have)
  4. Buffer and play a channel.
  5. Switch to the Death Grip, aka encase the phone in your palm like you do with any phone!
  6. Observe signal falling to 1 bar.
  7. TuneIn streaming stops dead when it runs out of buffered data.

iPhone 4 Brilliant Failure Has A Brilliant Solution! BumperGate!

Bumpergate, Steve Never Fails http://snapvoip.blogspot.com/
It is more and more evident that if you want to make calls with iPhone 4, either you need iScotch Solution, Bumper case or keeping the phone on the table! (I got a fanboy here, whom I laugh at, continuously today, I will wait for iPhone 4.2 I guess!).
When I stop laughing, I remembered how Steve Jobs introduced this brilliant creation, the antenna no droid boy could think of!
Oh what it That?

Got three of them
They are brilliant ways of design (Oh God Why?)
Yes they work, Only if you get one of these!

Ok We got This video How To

Solution For iPhone 4 Antenna Problem Found! Scotch Tape, Bumpercase!

http://snapvoip.blogspot.com/
Looks like the iPhone 4 Antenna problem is real! Steve Fail! Anyway the fanboys / gals who pre-ordered or stood in line (I saw plenty this morning) are in a lurch now. Phones are not working. They are not working due to the antennae system that Steve Jobs said ground breaking, Yes ground will break if all 600,000 phones were slammed on the floor, at once.
Anyway the analysis so far seem; if you hold the phone completing the circuit connecting two sections, as seen in the photo above, you tend to lose your signal. (Put a scotch tape over it until you get a case)
So the solution to the problem, it seem, as some Apple geniuses have suggested, fork over $30 and get a Bumper case, or any other case, preventing you from touching the edges!
Brilliant Steve, Brilliant!
May be you should give away these pinkies for free!

iPhone 4 Antenna - Signal Issue, Got A Bumper? Apples Solution

http://snapvoip.blogspot.com/
As we reported earlier, more info on the iPhone 4 Antenna - signal issue is appearing, all over the web.
Some people seem to have got not our problem from apple;
Reader Joe called up Apple to ask about the reception issues, and they said...
Their answer? "Get a bumper" and "it's not their problem".
I told the CSR that if their solution is to buy a bumper, why aren't they giving them out for free? Again, she said not her problem.
Quite an infuriating call - while I sympathize with the verbal beat-down that many of the Apple CSRs will be getting over this problem, they need a better solution than to recommend fixing the problem with their own rubber cases...

Gizmodo has a running review of iPhone 4 impressions and the following comments are plucked off that post. May be one of the engineers have Signal Booster Business!
I am getting horrible reception with my new iPhone 4. Dropped calls in places I never got dropped calls before. Downshifting to Edge frequently also. WTF Apple!
- Justin25
If my phone is lying on my desk/couch/etc.., I have decent service in my house but when I pick the phone up with a full hand (palm + all fingers) my service drops quickly to "No Service". If I use two or three fingers & hold it near the top, I have at least 2 bars & I can use the phone to make calls...
- Slim Johnson
Mixed bag here. I seem to get more bars in areas of my house where I didn't use to. On the other hand, I also seem to get less bars in other areas. Needs further testing for me to make a solid judgment.
- Gabriel Militello
In addition to that there are multitude of videos appearing on YouTube as well, selecting which one to post is a hassle itself.

Gizmodo

iPhone 4 Signal / Antenna Issue Demonstrated On Video!

iPhone 4 Signal / Antenna Issue http://snapvoip.blogspot.com/
This is good exaple of signal loss issue that occurs when holding the phone with the outer edge. How else would you hole it? The poster of the video below  repeated this test 20+ times with the same or similar results each time.
Calls said to be dropping off for the same issue, the reports are saying that if the phone is left alone it will show 4-6 bars on signal and as soon as you touch the metal band around, signal drops to 1-2 bars.

This shows even better signal disappearance.

Ultra High Speed 100G Switched Ethernet Services Field Trial Complete : Verizon

Ultra Speed, 100G Ethernet Field Trial http://snapvoip.blogspot.com/
Verizon has completed the industry leading ultra high speed Switched Ethernet Services (Verizon SES) field tests. 100 gigabit-per-second Ethernet traffic on a metropolitan Ethernet infrastructure were tested using Alcatel-Lucent equipment deployed in Verizon's Switched Ethernet Services network. The trial successfully transmitted data over 12.7 kilometers (7.9 miles) of field fiber in the company's Dallas area network.
"With this 100G Ethernet trial, Verizon is preparing for the future and the need to meet our customers' bandwidth needs in the metro Ethernet space, the 'network of tomorrow' will include building blocks such as 100G Ethernet that allow us to scale our switched Ethernet core as access speeds and customer demands increase. Our goal is to show 100GE can be carried on a metro network and do it with current equipment that avoids major changes -- and the associated costs -- to the existing network infrastructure" said Jean McManus, executive director of technology for Verizon.
The trial, which ran from June 14 - 18, used existing Alcatel-Lucent 7450 switching equipment with new plug-in cards to place native 100GE traffic on a single fiber, creating the high-speed links. Alcatel-Lucent's 7450 ESS nodes used 100 GE service interfaces with 100GBASE-LR10 optics, which provide low-cost, high-bandwidth transport over distances of up to 10 kilometers (6.2 miles).
"A seamless transition to 100GE leveraging existing Alcatel-Lucent IP Routing platforms enables Verizon to expand its innovative Ethernet service offerings in a timely and efficient manner, Services are the driver of revenues and the rationale for investment in the network. Our platforms deliver speed without compromising services, leveraging our breakthrough 100G silicon innovation and long-standing relationships with leading service providers such as Verizon." said Robert Vrij, president of the Americas region at Alcatel-Lucent.

Frontier Sues Google Over Google Voice : Frontier Communications Corp. v. Google Inc., 10-cv-545

Frontier Communications Corp. v. Google Inc., 10-cv-545 http://snapvoip.blogspot.com/
Frontier Communications Corp. filed a case against Google for infringing their patents with Google Voice. Google has acquired Grand Central and later converted it in to Google Voice. (A service we find very useful). Google is accused of infringing a new patent for enhanced telephony services, by the Stamford, Connecticut, based company in a complaint in federal court in Delaware.
Google has irked many telephony carriers like AT&T with it's Google Voice Service and it was a grand scandal when Apple blocked Google Voice from iPhones. Google is now working to expand the service even further. Google plans purchase to buy Global IP Solutions Holding AB, a IP Telephony and video conferencing technology pioneer, for about $68 million to expand Internet video and audio capabilities.
“We believe these claims are entirely without merit, and we’ll defend against them vigorously,” Andrew Pederson, a spokesman for Google, said by e-mail, Bloomberg / Businessweek reported.
The case is Frontier Communications Corp. v. Google Inc., 10-cv-545, U.S. District Court, District of Delaware (Wilmington).

iPhone 4 VS Droid X, Droid X WIns!

iPhone 4 VS Droid X, http://snapvoip.blogspot.com/
With both the phones yet to show up in users hands, PC World has done a feature comparison of the two leaders of mobile arena, iPhone 4 and Droid X.
Just Following their analysis, Droid X wins!

Both phones carry Processors that are similar in performance, a Draw

Display even though Droid has a larger Screen (4.3") than iPhone 4 (3.5") with retina display, iPhone 4 pack more pixels, making the display pleasant. iPhone 4 wins.

Storage, with iPhones fixed, 16 or 32GB and Droid x sporting 8GB plus capability to use 32GB MicroSD winner is easy to decide. Plus Droid X base model comes with 24GB for $199. Droid X wins

Camera and multimedia, Droid X has 8MP camera and iPhone 4 has 5MP one. Both capable of recording videos at 720P and PC World declares it is a draw perhaps because iPhone has a front facing second camera, but I beg to differ. Yet it is their analysis so,  A Draw

Connectivity department, both come with WiFi, Bluetooth, and GPS in addition to wireless connectivity. But Droid could be a WiFi Hotspot, iPhone can't! Droid X wins.

So as you can see, Droid X wins. Link to the article after the jump.

iOS 4 <> Cydia Compatibility List http://snapvoip.blogspot.com/
Since iOS 4 Jailbreak is already available, it is time you pay attention to what apps will be compatible with the new environment.
So the German site hack2learn, has come up with a list, actually a spreadsheet of apps, their version, Current status, multitasking capability, and notes. The list is kept current by the members of the group.
So if you are the type who runs a jailbroken iOS on a compatible device, iPhone 3g, iPhone 3GS etc, it is a good resource.

iOS 4, Disable Data Communications On iPhone.

iOS 4, Disable Data Connections http://snapvoip.blogspot.com/ iOS 4 Tips
If you have an iPhone and no data plan, then it is better ti turn off your data communications save you some money. iPhone will automatically try to connect to the net via any available medium. Once you disable the cellular data, it will only connect via WiFi Connection.
Just tap on settings -> General -> Network and turn off the Cellular Data and turn off.

If you do not do this, without a data plan, you might end up with a hefty bill from your carrier.

iOS 4 Tricks And Tips, Screen Orientation Lock, SMS Search, Calendar Enhancements.

iOS 4 Tricks And Tips. http://snapvoip.blogspot.com/
With iOS 4 the iPhone has become a tad better to use. While there are many improvements and totally new features, the following stands out for now.

1. Screen Orientation Lock
So many times I have tilted my iPhone only to find that it wanted a certain orientation while I wanted the other. But now, you are able to lock the screen, albeit in vertical orientation. Double tap the home button and on the Multi task bar, all the way to the left, you will find the orientation lock icon

2. SMS Searching, MMS Disabling and of course, MMS character count.
The iPhones SMS app also got a few new improvements. Most notable are, the ability to toggle off MMS and grouping of messages with multiple recipients. You can also find the character count helpful. The SMS search is the best new feature in this department. It's similar to search in the iOS. SMS search simply live-updates results as you keep adding to your query.

3. New iPod multitasking controls
Double-tapping the home button will bring up the multi-tasking drawer. It provides an easy means to switch from one app to the other. By swiping over to the very left of the drawer, you'll be able to access some minimal iPod controls next to the orientation lock, that you used to get when you tapped home button twice, earlier. Play/pause, forward, back. It's just enough to make some quick adjustments to song selection, but if you want more control, you will need to access the iPod app.

4. Camera Zoom
Yes, I always wanted to zoom the camera on the iPhone, now you can, even though it is digital zoon, which I never use on real pocket cameras, it is better than not, for those close up occasions.

5. Wikipedia,
It is good that you can search web and now Wikipedia, from the global search screen

6. The spell check
If you have read this blog, you already know that the languages are not my strongest point and I make spelling errors even while I dream, so thank you for the spell checker.

7. App Specific Location Service
Now you can select by app, if you want to allow it to find your location. You will also see who used location services by a little compass symbol attached to the icon.

8. App folders and Folder on Dock.
I am happy to have a ability to lump apps by folders and sometimes you will see an exclamation mark next to a folder. It is because, one of the apps got an alert! The fact you can drag folders into the dock, is pretty good too.

There are many more but these stuck as important for the moment. You will find more on Gizmodo.

updated : PwnageTool 4.01 Released,

Updated to correct version number

PwnageTool 4.01 Released http://snapvoip.blogspot.com/
As we all know, on Monday Apple gave a gift to all iPhone, iPod owners, iOS 4. But if you have used PwnageTool to hactivate and carrier unlock, you should not have upgraded. But many people did and they either had no 3G or Edge and some had MMS disappearing.
The Dev Team always advised not to upgrade with Apple upgrades but to waited for the Dev teams release. As per their promise, the Dev Team has released the PwnageTool 4.01.(PwnageTool 4.01).
But their are some caveats and you should watch out. There are some devices that are not supported by the update because Apple does not support these under iOS 4. But as usual, the team is working on a solution for the problem. so as of now;

  • iPhone 2G  - not supported
  • iPod Touch - not supported
  • iPod Touch 3G - not supported
The new PwnageTool only recognizes the official IPSWs that came out yesterday. The developers had access to IPSW 4.0 GM and those should not be used.

iPhone 3GS

The PwnageTool 4.01 only works with previously jailbroken 3GS devices with the old bootrom. If you have a Jailbroken iPhone 3GS with the OLD BOOTROM and you DID NOT use Spirit to jailbreak then you can create the ipsw with PwnageTool 4.0 and restore with your jailbroken recovery mode.
If you have an iPhone 3GS with the NEW BOOTROM this is NOT supported by PwnageTool 4.0 PwnageTool 4.01  (PwnageTool 4.01)

iPhone 3G

If you have a Jailbroken iPhone 3G at 3.1.2 (but not jailbroken with Spirit) then you should create the ipsw with PwnageTool 4.01 and restore from recovery mode or DFU mode.
If you have an out of the box iPhone 3G you should restore using a PwnageTool 4.01 ipsw using DFU mode.
If you have a Jailbroken 3.1.3 iPhone 3G it is very possible that this can fail from recovery mode, if this failure happens you will need to restore using DFU mode.
As an alternative to PwnageTool, you can use redsn0w on iPhone 3G (on both Windows and Mac) as mentioned in our last post.
IMPORTANT! Whenever you need to enter DFU mode, you will need to do so using PwnageTool.

 iPod touch 2G

If you have an iPod touch 2G (non-MC model) that is jailbroken (but not with Spirit) then you can restore using recovery mode.
As an alternative to PwnageTool, you can use redsn0w on non-MC iPod Touch 2G (on both Windows and Mac) as mentioned in our last post.

Baseband Unlock with Ultrasn0w
ultrasn0w has been updated to cover all basebands from 04.26.08 onward. iPhone 3G and 3GS baseband unlockers (those who rely on ultrasn0w to make phone calls) should always be very wary to update their firmware, however our Ultrasn0w application will unlock all recent (including the current) 3GS and 3G baseband firmware versions.  Once you are jailbroken using PwnageTool 4.01, install ultrasn0w from Cydia and you’ll be unlocked.
The Dev Team thanks @sherif_hashim for finding the crashing command that the new ultrasn0w 0.93 uses! and @oranav (who found the earlier +xlog crash).

Is Your MMS gone with iOS 4 update? Fix Is Here!

Some people had their 3G/edge/GPRS disappear with Apple iOS 4 update as we mentioned on "No 3G or Edge on iPhone". But now there seem to be a new batch of people having MMS problems, it has disappeared with the new update.
Please refer to above post for the solution, it seem to work. In the mean time, another solution has popped up 3G, Edge problem;
Connect to a WiFi source at home, your friends, or hotspot, then visit  http://www.unlockit.co.nz/unlockit  in Safari on your iPhone and create a new APN for your connection. It seem to work for some people.
Jailbreaking is fun, but you got to pay! :)

No 3g or Edge On iPhone after iOS 4 update, Solution Found

Looks like many people are having connectivity issues on iPhone 3GS after iOS 4 update. Lucky me I did not update yet.
The symptoms are
I updated 3 different iPhone 3Gs and one of them can not access anything over 3g or edge. If I flip on the wifi, I can access the internet. I also performed a reset and erase all settings and content, and still no luck.

Apple has told One person that this is only on jailbroken iPhones. But going through this forum thread tells otherwise. So legal owners are still in the ditch but Jailbroken ones seem to have found a solution;  person who had it jailbroken, had the following done in order to over come the trouble;

After hours of working on this, I finally found a half-way decent solution.

I had an iPhone 3GS on 3.1.3 that was previously jail-broken via Spirit. After the update to iOS4, 3G/Edge Data service as well as MMS and VVM were not working.

I first tried to download a new carrier profile from help.benm.at... This helped me get 3G/Edge Data service, but the MMS functionality was still gone.

I then tried a fresh Restore as a new iPhone - and that did the trick. However I was not satisfied because I lost a year worth of SMS... which was the only thing I was really worried about. Everything else I have is backed up via Microsoft Exchange.

So this is when I came across the following link. Basically the process goes like this.... back up your phone... save it to a temp directory... restore the phone as new... back up again... transfer over the SMS files from old backup to new backup... weird error occurs... reboots with sms but no 3g... now repeat the process with just one file... weird error occurs... reboots again this time with everything working.

I know it sounds crazy... but it worked perfectly. I hope this helps some of you out there with similar issues. If you want to backup contacts and stuff like that and don't have exchange... try synching it to mobile me, outlook, google, windows, yahoo or whatever options you have first.

Good Luck!

edit: in the link, it talks about where your backup is located... i run win7, and there it is located at "c:\Users\Your Name\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup"

iOS 4 Apps, They Are Trickling In!

iOS 4 Apps, They Are Trickling In!http://snapvoip.blogspot.com/
Since Apple released the iOS 4, now it is about the Apps to go with it. Apple stated accepting iOS 4 ready apps last week and there are already in the app store. Engadget has a list of interesting apps and they are updating it live, so if your favorite app is not here, you may want to click the link below to see more.
Cureent Apps that are iOS 4 ready;
  • Dropbox: Everyone's favorite file-syncing tool can now sync and complete uploads in the background, and also adds in support for fast app switching.
  • Windows Live Messenger for iPhone is now out -- that's new for iOS 4.
  • TuneIn Radio is now ready to play background audio, and support fast app switching.
  • Wordpress for iPhone is now iOS 4-ready as well.
  • Evernote: the notes-in-the-cloud app adds support for fast app switching, and can continue to record audio notes in the background.
  • Pandora: Yes, you can finally play Pandora in the background -- and the quick music controls on the left-most panel of the app switcher even control playback when it's in the background. Nifty.
  • ESPN ScoreCenter: Supports fast app switching, although you'll still have to open it up for scores to refresh, since there's no background updating API.
  • How to Cook Everything: Funny that a cookbook is one of the first iOS4 apps out there, but we're Mark Bittman fans, so this is pretty cool -- it supports fast app switching, so you don't have to reload a recipe every time you close the app. Oh, and it's got newer high-res art for the iPhone 4. Tasty.
  • EyeTV: Watch Streaming TV on iPhone and iPad
  • LinkedIn: Yep, LinkedIn's iPhone app adds fast app switching to the mix.

Stream Live TV To iPAD With EyeTV

Stream Live TV To iPAD http://snapvoip.blogspot.com/
Elgato has released their newest version of EyeTV App, EyeTV App 1.1 is a universal app, meaning it will be at home on both iPhone and iPad. It is also compatible with iOS 4.If you are already a EyeTV owner, the update is free but if you are new, get ready to fork over $5.
Another requirement is that you need have a MAC OS X Computer running EyeTV software 3.3.3 or higher and configured with a compatible TV tuner, and apparently you’ll need a Core 2 Duo processor if you want to stream live television.With EyeTV, one will be able to watch, record live TV on iPhone or iPad via a 3G or Wi-Fi connection. TV buffs will be able to take their great TV shows along with them. Here are some stuff one will be able to do;
  • Watch live TV and change channels anywhere (via a Wi-Fi or 3G connection)
  • Watch your EyeTV recordings
  • Browse the comprehensive Program Guide and view details
  • Start recordings back home on your Mac immediately or schedule them for later
  • View and edit your recording schedules
  • Automatically launch EyeTV on your Mac at home as needed

All is good and I think it will be nicer to watch TV on iPad than on iPhone. Obviously, taking in to account of the AT&T network, it might be better if one sticks to WiFi to watch streaming TV.

Free Calls On iPhone, iPad http://snapvoip.blogspot.com/
With so many applications on Apple App store, it is hard to find an app you want but sometime news seeps through. This time via VoIP & Gadgets blog of TMC's Tom Keating. He wrote about this new IP Telephony app for iPhone, Whistle Phone, Vopium is another Mobile VoIP App for iPhone.
The app gives you capability to make free calls in exchange for listening to a 15 sec or so voice add.

It allows anyone, from anywhere in the world to call anyone in the continental USA for free and if you want to make other International calls, you can pay which they say are low rates. iPhone Knockoff with Android 2.1

iPhone Knockoff with Android 2.1 http://snapvoip.blogspot.com/
With the Actual iPhones being manufactured in China and the people who actually make these phones not being able to afford iPhones, have mainly tuned in to knockoffs. While there are many such devices, M8 has found one unique one, iPhone look alike running Android 2.1 and yet providing an iPhone interface.
Technically it seem to be running Android 2.1 system on Mavell PXA310 - 624MHz MHz processor and costs around $250 (1700 Yuan), still too costly for Foxconn workers earning 900 Yuan a month. Steve, no wonder Foxconn employees commit suicide. Do Something.
