Skype (Microsoft) Drops Asterisk Support, Ending Skype For Asterisk

Skype ends Asterisk for Skype Agreement http://snapvoip.blogspot.com/
Within two weeks of acquiring Skype, Microsoft is set out to cut all Open Source ties to Skype, begining with Asterisk, the best open source IPPBX in the world.

According to a letter from Digium to it's customers, Skype will not renew its agreement with Digium that allowed Asterisk to be integrated with the Skype service through Asterisk for Skype, a product by Digium..
"It includes proprietary software from Skype that allows Asterisk to join the Skype network as a native client. Skype has decided not to renew the agreement that permits us to package this proprietary software,” according to the letter.
Skype for Asterisk sales and activations will end on July 26, but Skype has promised to continue supporting and maintaining the software for two more years. Skype may extend this time period “at their discretion.”
But I love what Digium's Danny Windham has to say about the whole issue of Skype;
Is the acquisition good for Skype? Given the valuation, it’s certainly good for the Skype shareholders. But what about the service itself? In a word, no. History suggests that Microsoft’s tendency towards notoriously proprietary tactics will slow the development of Skype as a business tool. Will Microsoft wall-off Skype from competing products, completely? Or, at a bare minimum will Microsoft ensure their products work much better with Skype than those from competitors? Time will tell.

This transaction has attracted speculation from around the globe regarding the future of Skype, Microsoft, Google, Facebook, incumbent phone companies, VoIP, video communications, Apple, the Iphone, Andriod, and I’m sure even pork belly futures. Regardless of your view on how the merger will ultimately shake out, it’s hard to deny at least this one fact: disruptive communications companies and technologies are changing the world at a rapid pace – and in this case, they are generating gigantic value for their shareholders in the process.

Skype for Asterisk (SfA) Software Formally Launched

http://snapvoip.blogspot.com/
Digium has finally released the Skype for Asterisk Software and is available for download. For months many people were waiting for the software from the time it was announced at Astricon 2008. What is more to the product is that it is available for onetime fee of $66 per channel. You can get it right now from Digium Store.
One thing I know about the product is that it was heavily beta tested and then again went through a phase of post beta testing as well. Unofficially SfA became available a little while ago, when we loaded our installations with SfA.
All I can say is another fine product from Digium.
But what is better than to hear from Digium CEO,Danny Windham, that they consume what they produce;
"“Digium has been using Skype for Asterisk for the past few months while the product has been in development, We created Skype accounts such as Digium Sales and Digium Support—a convention I suspect many companies will quickly adopt. Now, our customers all over the world can call us for free using Skype and our Asterisk PBX processes the inbound call just like it would a normal call. This is going to save Digium and our customers a lot of money.”"
It is not only Digium, DATUS a Digium partner too liked the product very much. “Adding Skype for Asterisk to the DATUS indali OBX, our IP-PBX, will offer our customers inexpensive and secure international calling that, for instance, could be used for toll free customer services,” said Jonny Kueppers, vice president of sales and marketing at DATUS. “We believe that the price and cost savings will be welcome with today’s budgets.”

Indeed the cost savings already achieved with any of the Digium products could be really enhanced with Asterisk's capability to integrate with Skype.

Skype for Asterisk Features
Skype for Asterisk, which is compatible with the free and open source Asterisk versions 1.4, 1.6 and AsteriskNOW™, as well as the commercially licensed Asterisk Business Edition™, is unique in the market today. It is the only solution that integrates directly with Skype, enables multiple concurrent Skype calls from a single Skype account, and supports both G.711 and G.729a calling.
In addition, with the new software, customers can:
  • Manage business Skype accounts with the Business Control Panel
  • Get low Skype global rates on outbound calls (as low as 2.1US¢ per minute to more than 35 countries worldwide; connection fee and fair usage policies apply)

Skype For Asterisk In Digium Store

Skype For Asterisk
Digium has released the pricing of the Skype For Asterisk and is available to purchase from the Digium Store.
Skype For Asterisk single channel is priced at $66 which think is very reasonable. If you enable the Skype for Asterisk (SFA) channel(s) one will instantly be able to have complete access to the Skype network, providing low cost PSTN access and free calling to millions of Skype users.

But please follow the guide lines provided by Digium and learn about the benefits and proper use of the software with your astgerisk server(s).
Digium expressively states that;
"*Please note that one license key will be generated for each order line item. Each license key is good only for the number of channels for which it is generated. For example, to license five (5) Skype for Asterisk channels on an Asterisk server in Los Angeles and five (5) Skype for Asterisk channels on an Asterisk server in Sydney, please place two separate line items in your basket for five (5) channels each. Do not make a single order for ten (10) channels."
Happy Skyping with Asterisk.

Skype, Largest International Communications Carrier

Number one call carrier
If you thought AT&T joining hands with RIAA id bad news, now the news is that it is loosing to Skype in international call carrying business. Now I wonder if Skype users get letters from AT&T and RIAA, after all it is a peer to peer application and one can share files with it!
Skype has been a talk of the town for years now and looks like making some money for Ebay, who paid hefty price for it. Skype made $550 million in 2008, which is peanuts for companies like AT&T.

TeleGeography estimates that Skype's international traffic jumped by 41 percent in 2008 and topped 33 billion minutes of use, most of that in free calls. Traditional international calls grew only 12 percent in 2008.
But now with Skype joining with companies like Digium, the creator of open source IPPBX software Asterisk (Skype for Asterisk) and the latest Skype drive Skype for SIP which targets small and medium business PBX and VoIP Phones, will be pulling in business customers everywhere and we might read in 2009 report that it is the number one local carrier.
As many mobile hand sets now are capable of running mobile VoIP apps, I am sure executives of big phone companies spending more time talking about Skype than talking with AT&T Talking With RIAA.
ARS Technica has a very good article on this subject.

Skype For Asterisk Beta (SFA) User Experience.

http://snapvoip.blogspot.com/
Jason Goecke of Adhearsion fame, has been working on Skype For Asterisk Beta (SFA) and I like what he has to say.
"My impression of the implementation so far is good. There is a lot more functionality in the software than I had expected, including support for Skype presence information within Asterisk."
Also the installation and the use of Skype for Asterisk seem to be easy;
"I received the software and was up and running within 10 minutes, as the install process was trivial. I have managed to place calls from a SIP client connected to Asterisk to and from users on Skype. The sound quality is good and interoperability with the rest of the Asterisk features works well."

Skype For Asterisk (SFA) Enters Second Beta Testing Group.

http://snapvoip.blogspot.com/
Skype For Asterisk (SFA) was announced a while back when a demo call was conducted on stage at Astricon. Since then there have been a quite a bit of development at Digium behind the curtains. Digium announced today that the testing of Skype For Asterisk has moved to second and larger group of beta testers, paving a way for public beta in the near future.
Skype for Asterisk will be a boon to all the asterisk users and businesses. People will be able to call them free using Skype and the asterisk servers will be able to route outbound calls via SkypeOut for lower costs.
The other foremost requirement is the quality of the calls and Digium assures us that SFA is not a proxy solution.
"will have the ability to make, receive and transfer Skype calls from within Asterisk phone systems, using existing hardware and existing Asterisk configurations: Skype calls become just another Asterisk call."
Asterisk-Skype Solutions are vital to SMBs and SMEs who trying save money during these troubled times. But again it will be a good business decision to save money in any case.
Once the beta cycles are over, the final market release of the SFA Component will have;

1. SkypeIn: Receive calls from the public telephone network using standard phone numbers

2. SkypeOut: Make calls to landline and mobile numbers at incredibly low rates

3. Standard phone features: Incoming/outgoing digits (DTMF), Caller ID

4. Smart call routing based on called Skype Name, Caller ID, country of the caller, language they have chosen in their Skype client and etc.

5. Retrieve Skype credit balance information

6. Store and call PSTN and Skype contacts

7. Retrieve and set Skype user presence information

8. Support for G.711 and G.729 voice codecs

9. Each Skype channel license includes a Digium G.729 codec license

among other features. You can read more at;
