The Law.com is reporting that Verizon worked with a large and secretive patent collecting horde known as Intellectual Ventures to play cards against Tivo. Tivo sued Verizon earlier for infringing one of it's patents.
Verizon Communications has agreed to pay Intellectual Ventures (IV) as much as $350 million for the deal.(The $350 million Verizon deal was first reported by the Wall Street Journal in 2008. Merino confirmed on Thursday that Verizon is a member of IV.)
I think we are set to see a patent war (Techdirt has a collection to show it), You can add Intellectual Ventures as an arms dealer in this war. IV is employing patent trolls to launch and fight it's lawsuits, according to the law.com
My next phone will not come from Verizon. You too can protest about this patent war, choice is yours.

TIVO Gets Wireless N with AN0100 802.11n Access Point / Wireless Adapter Combo.

TIVO finally seems to have recognized the need for high speed wireless needs and has submitted a set of document to FCC.
In addition to the high speed, the USB adapter will be able to operate in two modes. As a wireless adapter and also as an access point according to the documents.
The mode of operation is selected by a physical switch at the bottom of the device and there are some operational differences in two modes. As a slave or Adapter mode the device will support all UNII bands but as Master (AP) mode it will only support the non DFS bands.

Perhaps this will allow the master TIVO at home to transmit programs and shows to slave units via wireless N, all TIVOs controlled by iPhones.

i.TV 2.0 is turning old Tivo remotes into obsolete devices for iPhone users. i.TV, an already super TV program schedule application is getting into the business of remote control of boxes that manages TV shows, like Tivo. Any broadband connected Tivo settops will be able to be controlled by iPhone with i.TV 2.0 which will be available from iTunes App store this month. i.TV not the same as iTV that later turned into AppleTV.

Remote Control: i.TV now combines the TV guide and the remote control on an iPhone or iPod touch. Remote controls are powered by the i.TV Remote Control Framework, which allows third parties to develop remote controls for use on the i.TV platform.

TiVo remote: TiVo is the first to introduce a soft remote on i.TV. You can now change the channel, fast forward, record and most importantly play your favorite shows and movies, with just a tap on your iPhone or iPod touch.

New look: i.TV now has a simplified and streamlined user interface.

iTunes: From within i.TV, discover related TV and movie content and then tap to download from iTunes.

After Tivo, Blockbuster Looks At Apple

According to the Blockbuster / Tivo deal announced Wednesday, TiVo subscribers (Broadband) will have the capability to purchase or rent movies on Blockbuster's OnDemand catalog. Customers will need TiVo Series2, Series3, HD, or HD XL digital video recorder (DVR) set-top boxes in order to accomplish the task.
The other side of the partnership, Blockbuster will carry Tivo merchandise in their stores and online portal. About 10,000 movies will be available when the service launches in the latter half of this year. Most rental films on Blockbuster.com today cost about $2 to $4, while purchased movies start at less than $10.
But the most tingling news is that Blockbuster is planing to reach Apple Devices to do the same;
"You will see us in a large number of other devices going forward," said Kevin Lewis, senior vice president of digital entertainment at Blockbuster, who added that the company also plans to makes its system available to Apple Inc's (AAPL.O) products. "We need to be in the normal places that consumerswant to watch movies," he said."
