Andy Abramson, again :) directed me to a new company, Tribair, which was launched by  Mobivox founder Eric Reiher.
If you know or remember FON, the free WiFi mesh that allowed you to access WiFi all over the world for free for sharing your internet connection via a WiFi router, provided by FON. I used FON in Europe, Tokyo extensively in early years before I got my smartphones. Even Skype rode on FON by providing "SMC Wi-Fi Phone Package" in 2006 that merged the SMC WSKP100 handset, Fon's La Fonera router, 500 SkypeOut minutes, and a full year of Skype voicemail, all for $160.

Tribair does the same thing to VoIP, what FON did to internet access on the go or while sitting still. The concept is simple, to borrow from Andy;

You install a Tribair client, find a hotspot and make free calls to other TriBair subscribers or for low rates to others.. In alot of ways this is as much like what Skype Access does with Boingo, but for free. And if the FON model of sharing between carriers and between their customers can keep growing, then Tribair has more than a shot at being successful, especially in light of T-Mobile's statistics which shows how many of their customers use their mobiles to make calls over Wi-Fi

Low Bandwidth Skype For Mobile Markets With Low 3G Penetration.

This week, Skype announced a low-bandwidth version Skype, for mobile markets in parts of the world where 3G service is not available or sparse. Skype describes it's mobile solution as a simple carrier solution utilizing purpose built client-server solution. The optimization of software for low bandwidth is certainly a plus for VoIP IP Telephony provider.

Even though we complain at slightest dip in our bandwidths, be it mobile or land line, there are many parts in the world where getting a service is the issues rather than the bandwidth. Skype Demands Nimbuzz To Remove Support For All Skype!

There seem to be a some kind of row between Nimbuzz, the mobile service provider and the Skype, the VoIP behemoth.
Nimbuzz seem to be saying that Skype is shedding all third party connections ahead of the impending IPO but Skype is saying it is not true. The decision to stop the service is because Nimbuzz failed to continue communications with Skype regarding Nimbuzz’ compliance with Skype API Terms of Use and End User Licence Agreement.
Skype did play the same game or gave the same or similar reasons when Skype blocked fring, another player in the mobile VoIP field. Coincidentally both companies, Nimbuzz and fring, recently offered their own versions of paid calling services, Nimbuzzout and fringout. Techcrunch thinks that to be the real reason than load of bull Skype is dealing.

AT&T Admits To Blocking VoIP In Its Wireless Network

According to the press release by xG Technology, AT&T has admitted to the FCC, the Federal Communications Commission, that AT&T blocks VoIP from the wireless networks. So blocking of Google Voice a while ago that it admitted has nothing to do but Apple's doing holds very thin. In fact no carrier in continental USA allows VoIP in it's wireless spectrums, even though it will save millions to consumers. In it's response to FCC AT&T argued that it needed to block VoIP to assure that revenues from its current voice plans would not be reduced by enabling mobile VoIP calling. 
“It makes perfect sense,” said Joseph Bobier, chief technology officer of xG Technology, “No U.S. carrier currently allows VoIP across mobile networks. Given the billions of dollars they spent acquiring spectrum, building and deploying their cellular networks, the economics simply wouldn’t work.  VoIP saves consumers money, but the flip side of this benefit is that this means less revenue for operators.  In fact, the only two major wireless carriers in Europe that allow mobile VoIP traffic added charges that essentially strip out the savings that VoIP delivers.”
By focusing on reducing the cost of the cellular network itself, xG Technology is a company that believes mobile VoIP can provide significant savings to consumers and still be profitable for carriers.  The company’s approach has been to develop a network that uses free spectrum instead of the carrier paying billions for licensed spectrum.  This translates to lower costs that can be passed onto the consumer.

So now you can shed a sigh of relief if you thought that only Apple did not like VoIP on its iPhone platform. Yes I am mad about all these crippling efforts by carriers and their cohorts, like Apple and Microsoft. T-Mobile, block the use of Skype on iPhone (and on Blackberry) in Germany

No Skype On T-Mobile
After the launch of Skype for iPhone, more than 600,000 have downloaded the product from iTunes App Store, and Skype ranks as the number one iPhone download around the world, which was expected and yet impressive.
Apple App Store in Germany also ranks Skype as the number one product but according to skype, Deutche Telecom users are verboten (forbidden) from using the app. This seems moronic as other carriers like AT&T, O2 in UK have welcomed the product. Generally German mobile carriers forbid VoIP application on mobile phones.
It was the same reason, that we waited for developer version of Android G1, a statement by T-Mobile honcho at the release of T-Mobile G1;
"When I (Wired Magazine) talked to Cole Brodman, the CTO of T-Mobile, after the event about what would stop something like Skype from designing a program that could run on the phone, negating the need for a massive voice plan, he said he had "worked with Google" to make sure Android couldn't run VOIP." (Update despite CTO's comment, T-Mobile USA allows VoIP calls on phone with WiFi.)
We are happy with our open Android G1 and Our iPhone with Skype. I guess one customer is too many to have lost these days.

Mobile 2 Skype Service From Linkwell

Linkwell is providing free mobile to Skype calling to it's 28tel customers. Linkwell is HonkKong based and allows it's mobile users to call any Skype user online, from their mobiles.
To use the service, the user needs to log into his/her personal 28TEL account and adds a Skype contacts to their contacts list. These contacts gets a local number assigned by the telco. If the contact is online, dial the contacts local number from the mobile phone for local call charge.

At this time, the 28TEL service, which is in beta, is free and only available to users in North America, Brazil and selected Asian countries, including China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Japan, Korea and the Philippines.

Layoffs At Fring?

Even though the company is said to be doing well, Fring has about 20%(all 10 of them) go according to TechCrunch. But these layoffs might keep the company afloat throughout 2009 according to company CEO Avi Schecter.
I like the service what fring provides me and recent deals like joint effort with Mobilkom, should have pushed the company in the upward direction on charts that investors and bankers look at. But I have a feeling that Fring has not problem, coming up with solutions, like it did with our mobile problems!
Mobile is on the up.

TruPhone On Blackberry

GigaOM is reporting that Truphone is now working on the Blackberry. Om Malik has an early version of the program running on his Balckberry and very successful, evn on T-Mobile, unlike Andy Abramson with iSkoot on Android.
I will try TruPhone on my Blackberry later today as I am a bit busy during the day. I hope to have the same sucess that Om Malik did. But if you already has an account with TruPhone you might run into truble getting that account working with the new phone. Om Malik has opened new accounts on several occations on different phones. Lucky for me I tried TruPhone on my partners phone. Balckberry will be my first TruPhone Pnone.

iSkoot For Skype On Android Does Not Work

Everyone seem to be trying iSkoot on Android and seem to be failing. But I wonder if these peole know the dirty little secret that I published on Why I Will Not Get A T-Mobile Android! (No VoIP On It);

"We want to be open in a way that consumers can rely on," is the way Brodman put it to me."
Among us we have two mobile devices that uses iSkoot and one of them are my Blackberry and we have no complain.
Andy over at VoIP Watch has written an account on trying to get iSkoot working on Android. The reason that he was unsuccessful, could have something to do with the above statement by CTO of T-Mobile

Docomo Phone With A DLP Projector

While we here trying to get VoIP in to cell phones,(Mobile VoiP) Japan is marching forward in the field of phone design and innovative use of the same phones. We reported that iPhone in Japan was not that big a hit in Japan. Why? Because
The NTT Docomo has been demonstrating a mobile phone at CEATEC JAPAN 2008 with a DLP projector from Texas Instruments embedded. The device is capable of projecting a TV image of about 24 inches to a wall or a screen about same distance away!

Fring Expands Supported Devices And Adds My Favorite, Nokia N810 to the ist

I was very happy to see that Fring has added Nokia N810 to the list of supported devices with full fring features including internet calls, chat, presence. I carry N810 where ever I go as my web tablet. When I discovered Fring more than a year ago, I had a feeing that it woud disrupt the mobile VoIP.
In addition to Nokia N810, Fring now supports more popular Sony Ericsson and Nokia phones based on JavaME (J2ME)) There is aso a new special version called minifring for these phones without VoIP Support. According to Fring, minifring users will now be able to join the ring of fringsters worldwide.
In addition to a these new capabilities, there will be new fring applications available in the fringAdd-ons catalog soon. Keep you fring on for the hundreds of newly supported devices like iPhone. The current version might not run on newer iPhones with iPhone 2.0.
