Nexus One Gets Boost From Google Financials, Vice 'n Versa

Google was uppity up about it's financials as they have beaten the market expectations.

Google reported $5.06 billion for the quarter, up 19 percent from last year. Net income for the quarter also were up at $1.96 billion, from $1.4 billion last year.

They were also happy about the financials of Nexus One, Google's own Android Phone, which is supposed to be leaving shelves at about 60,000 a day, which translates into about 92 million a year :). 60,000 activations of Nexus One a day is an achievement itself in today's saturated mobile market.
The Google Android Market (Android App Store) is growing too, AM now has about 38.000 apps. This is also a milestone as in last September it just passed 10,000 app mark. I guess app store wars are up!
But the good news was that Nexus One is making money and the project is in the black! Google almost were laughing at the nay sayers who thought and said, Nexus One is a flop!
I will be flopping to a Nexus One or better when my AT&T contract runs out on my iPhone 3G, unless iPhone 4G is so attractive AND available from another carrier!

According to engadget and its reliable readers, Apple has released iPhone OS 3.1 Beta and iPhone 3.1 SDK to the iPhone Developer Community. I am beginning to wonder if there is something really wrong with iPhone OS 3.0. My iPhone 3G has hanged it self more times since the upgrade than it's entire life in my hand, which is closer to an year.
The iPhone battery management and WiFi drop offs even when sitting next to the wireless router are other reported errors, the former specially for the iPhone 3GS and the latter for both iPhones.

Either way the engadget discussion might get heated up and give us more information. They already have attached screen captures from improved video app for iPhone 3GS.

Old iPhone 3G Accessories Are Compatible With iPhone 3GS

After Apple announced the new iPhone 3GS, many people realized that it is not much different from the previous one, iPhone 3G. The camera which is 3.0 Mega pixels, capable of recording videos and also could auto focus. Apple also threw in voice control and compass of which I only miss the voice control. In addition to faster processing of course you have a choice of 32GB, 16GB and 8GB memory options, starting from $99.
So basically iPhone 3GS is everything iPhone 3G was and a bit more. So all the accessories that you bought for iPhone 3G will work with iPhone 3GS. The only problem is for the vendors and manufacturers of these accessories, to inform users that their products are compatible with the new iPhone. Marketing campaigns could be very expensive and the current economy is not that helpful. (I was wondering about the economy as I was trying to get a seat to fly to Tokyo yesterday as all the flights I wanted were all fully booked!)

In my case, I use my iPhone for most of my phone calls as Office (follow me), home and Google Voice numbers are forwarded to my iPhone.
Then I manage a few servers via Logmein (This application alone is one of the most used application on my iPhone). Then being an GPS bug, I use a bunch of iPhone GPS applications and mapping (I usually get lost in my own home town. So that drains most of my juice. Then I carry some music to keep me entertained and oh I also use it to geotag my photos I take with my DSLR (it lacks DPS) and I just take another photo with iPhone with location information.
I guess these are enough reasons for winning a juice pack so I will make this a comment!

RIM’s BlackBerry Curve Beats Apple’s iPhone To Become The Smartphone Best-seller Q1 2009

According to The NPD Group, an aggressive “buy-one-get-one” promotion by Verizon Wireless helped RIM’s BlackBerry Curve move past Apple’s iPhone to become the best-selling consumer smartphone in the U.S. in the first quarter (Q1) of 2009. RIM’s market share increased by 15% to reach almost 50% of the smartphone market in Q1 2009 against the Q4, 2008. This quarter, Apple’s and Palm’s share both declined 10 percent each.

NPD’s “Smartphone Market Update” report list the following as the top-five best-selling smartphones in the Q1 2009;

RIM BlackBerry Curve (all 83XX models)
Apple iPhone 3G (all models)
RIM BlackBerry Storm
RIM BlackBerry Pearl (all models, except flip)
T-Mobile G1

“Verizon Wireless’s aggressive marketing of the BlackBerry Storm and its buy-one-get-one BlackBerry promotion to its large customer base contributed to RIM capturing three of the top five positions,” said Ross Rubin, director of industry analysis at The NPD Group. “The more familiar, and less expensive, Curve benefited from these giveaways and was able to leapfrog the iPhone, due to its broader availability on the four major U.S. national carriers.”

According to first quarter financial report, AT&T celebrated improved postpaid wireless growth with increased integrated device penetration, double-digit increases in Internet and strategic business services.
AT&T’s first-quarter revenues totaled $30.6 billion, net income attributable to AT&T was $3.1 billion, diluted earnings per share totaled $0.53 and cash from operating activities totaled $7.9 billion.
More Than 1.6 Million Apple iPhone 3G Activations. AT&T’s postpaid subscriber growth reflects continued success with iPhone 3G. In the first quarter, AT&T’s iPhone 3G activations totaled more than 1.6 million, more than 40 percent of them for customers who were new to the company. AT&T’s U.S. iPhone exclusive continues to deliver subscribers with ARPUs (average monthly revenues per subscriber) that are approximately 1.6 times higher and churn rates that are significantly lower than the company’s overall postpaid subscriber base.

“These results demonstrate focused and disciplined execution as we work through a tough economy,” said Randall Stephenson, AT&T chairman and chief executive officer. “Our cost-improvement initiatives are on track, earnings and cash flow were solid, our balance sheet and credit metrics continue to be strong.

“Most important, during this down cycle we continue to invest in key growth areas like mobile broadband, more bandwidth to the home through our all-IP AT&T U-verse platform, and advanced global business solutions delivered over AT&T’s premier Internet backbone network. We have good momentum in all of these areas.

"I am particularly pleased with the success of our iPhone 3G initiative, which has driven strong high-end customer growth and delivered financial benefits ahead of our original outlook. iPhone 3.0 Gets 12.8MB downloads via 3G

Macrumors user Getinlin1 has posted the image below indicating speed 12.8Mbps on the iPhone via 3G. He was downloading podcasts from iTunes. But at the same time another user reported what I experienced, downloads from App Store are still capped at 10Mbps. But during the day time in a congested area, I get much lower speeds on iPhone 3G.

AT&T 2G Coverage Weakened?

According to Open For Business, AT&T has changed the frequencies of EDGE/2G service used by most of the pre 3G phones. Instead of steady and far reaching 850Mhz, now users can enjoy 1900MHz band. This leaves users of older phones in a bit of a trouble. This includes the original and expensive iPhone 1G.
The switch has been confirmed by AT&T and was done to boost the 3G service that we are using and spend our battery power hunting for it, in our new and shiny iPhone 3G. The affected users were allegedly told by AT&T to switch to newer 3G phones.
So I guess people who paid exorbitant prices for the original iPhone must be wondering, what did I do? like I did when I got my first bill for iPhone 3G!
But this is what OFB had to say about costs!;
"When I contacted AT&T’s technical support seeking a solution to the problem, the company did offer a $200 one-time credit, a helpful offer, but not nearly enough to offset replacing my family’s two perfectly functional iPhones and additional Nokia handset (equipment totaling about $1,000 in value over the last two years), nor did the company offer to offset the additional fees attached to the new phones (a cumulative total of $30/month). The standard upgrade offered was pursuant to a new two-year contract on all three lines. Over the course of the next two years, AT&T’s offer would cost an additional $920 plus tax to restore the level of service previously available."

Actually partially from AT&T! You can order the phone and pick it up at the store nearest to you. (Or any store near you that carry the iPhone).
This was earlier possible with Apple online store as well! But I think a new stock of iPhone 3G has made it to the stores and AT&T does not want to keep it's shelves loaded! So they posted;
"As of October 9, iPhone 3G is now in stores. We have both 8GB and 16GB (black & white) in stock and available in all AT&T stores."

So What Are those iPhone Trouble And Whom To Blame?

iPhone 3G Reception Problems? Yes, The problems seem to have started as soon as the Phone was released on 11th July. But people were too busy stroking their new and sleek phones, they could not believe that the phone could have any problems. Of course ignore those activation glitches, they were because of those servers that could not keep up with the demand.
So the problems seem to involve 3G service as we too mentioned in our previous article. Bad reception, equally bad and wavering signal strength, Slow data speeds and worse, dropped calls. (I have been known to throw phones when that happens and I always took those expensive insurance form the phone companies that were looking to make an extra bucks. So I could afford to throw one or two phones!.
Back to iPhone troubles, I have been following discussion threads on Apple's board from the beginning and on the first thread I read statements like;
""Two cups and a string could get better reception!""
But there were no proper answeres tot he question regarding reception question raised. People have gone through software upgrades and such but without success in getting better working iPhone. In the last thread one user mentioned that he is having trouble with both Softbank, Japan (Now we know why those Japanese were stroking their iPhones.) and AT&T thus concluding that the problem lies with the phone!
That thread you can find here. So far I have not seen any response from Apple. So it will be interesting to know how many phone did get returned!. The current active Discussion thread is here.
I would blame Steve Jobs for all this trouble. Let him go and find the one to blame and fire! If you want more information on the subject, you can follow this Slashdot discussion as well. And if yoou are still unhappy, get a Blackberry!

Real Cost Of iPhone 3G In USA And Why Apple Is Bullish

According to Munster, one of the most bullish analyst on Apple (AAPL) shares are on the buy list and carries $250 price tag according to an article written by Eric Savitz states that there will be some where around 45 million morons or semi morons that unable to do proper calculations get drawn into headlight of low price of iPhone.
I saw about 4 of those morons today as I rode the elevator for less than 1/4 of a minute. So I was dragged into reading the article more closely to find out the actual price of iPhone 3G for US customers.
So while the retail price of the iPhone at $199 is half the price of first generation iPhone, there seem to be other costs will make the iPhone 3G more expensive during the life of the required two-year contract. It is also estimated that the actual hardware costs will be a lot higher than the stated $199 price tag.

The minimum iPhone hardware will cost minimum $217 for upgrade eligible subscriptions, and if you are not eligible it will be $417. Also new customers are estimated to spend $234 to $427. That is without the service fees that have become higher than with the older iPhone.
The minimum data plan will cost $30 and $5 for 200 text messages.

So I am very glad that we decided to invest in Apple rather than on iPhones and we thank all those people for keeping thee AAPL price tag up.

iPhone 3G Jailbreak Allows to Run Unofficial Apps.

The iPhone Dev Team has released its PwnageTool 2.0.1 that said to be jailbreaking Apple latest iPhone operating system 2.0 on all devices iPhone 1s Gen, iPhone 3G and iPod Touch. According to the post on iPhone Dev Teams blog, an unreleased exploit in the iPhone OS was used to allow non-Apple applications to run on Apple’s iPhone 2.0 platform.
“We adapted our Pwnage technique to the 2.0 firmware, using a new, unreleased exploit that we’d been keeping to ourselves in the hope that Apple wouldn’t patch it. This … enable[s] you to run all the custom software and patches you please.”
There were earlier rumors that suggested the hack would unlock the iPhones allowing users to connect the iPhone to carrier of their choice in the USA. However, the blog clarified "This software does not unlock the phone, it just jailbreaks and activates it. "
Guess people have to payup to AT&T for services for now at least!

Free Wi-Fi for IPhone Is Still A Pipe Dream For US iPhone Users.

If you were looking for free Wi-Fi for your not yet available iPhone 3g based on the webpage on AT&T site that proclaimed;
"AT&T knows Wi-Fi is hot, and free Wi-Fi even hotter, which is why we are proud to offer iPhone customers free access to the nation's largest Wi-Fi hotspot network with more than 17,000 hotspots, including Starbucks. Now users can relax and access music, e-mail and web browsing services with their favorite blend in hand from the comfort of their favorite location." which since have disappered,
You may have to wait even longer than the new iPhones to arrive at the AT&T counters and shelves.

When inquired about the webpage; AT&T spokesperson Seth Bloom told Ars Technica that the webpage was yet another error. "We have not made any announcement regarding free Wi-Fi and iPhone," he said. Though the page is still up at this time, Bloom told that "the webpage was posted in error and is being removed." AT&T was not yet ready to roll out free Wi-Fi for iPhone users.

"We have not made any announcement regarding free Wi-Fi and iPhone, Wi-Fi is a real differentiator for AT&T and it is our intention to make it available to as many customers as possible."

Welcome to the new AT&T, we're currently out of iPhones, how can I help you?

I had to smile when I saw this on crave, they have even called 50 AT&T stores across 11 states and they were not even able to tell when they will be stocking up the iPhone 3G models. Link to the complete crave article after the jump.

iPhone 3G Cracked!

Despite the best efforts of Apple and AT&T, it appears that the latest version of the iPhone has been unlocked via the same method as used on the original iPhone.

A Brazilian blog, TechGuru, posted the first report of it. Gizmodo checked it out, and said the method involves using a special SIM card adapter. It tricks the phone into thinking it's on an approved network.
