That is what Techcrunch tells us. After giving a good analysis of the birth of the "free" Google Phone, the article goes on to say how carriers (Freddy Krueger) ate up the Google's fine idea of Free Phone.

The whole idea seem to have come from a tweet by Robert Scoble;

“My conversation last night with a Google VP confirmed that they threw their principles under the bus in order to gain Android market share,” but had continued this morning with a followup;

“What did the Google VP say? They learned from Google Nexus One that carriers hold all the cards. They had to play ball with them,” Tweet.

Now you know what happened to the free Google Phone, that was coming.

Yes if Techcrunch is right it seems. Facebook alarmed by the iPhone and Google's own Android, Nexus One, has quietly been building a phone of it's own, Facephone! Facepalm on you Google, and you too Apple.
The facebook phone said to be worked on by two high level Facebook employees – Joe Hewitt and Matthew Papakipos. Yes that is iPhone facebook app Joe Hewitt. Papakipos has sailed from Google Chrome to facebook.
TC thinks it will be a low cost phone around $50 with all the facebook features users want built in and from what I read it is going to be just a phone with facebook, one that you can call your friends just shouting the name of your friend at the phone.
I think it will take much more than that to make me use facebook phone, my old iPhone 3G and my T-Mobile G1, can do all those and more. Once I get my replacement for Apple 3G, soon, it is going to be hard to move me, to a cheap phone. Then again, most of the facebook users are teenagers with smaller pockets. Yes, it might fly! like the Google's Nexus One, in to the oblivion.

Nexus One Gets Boost From Google Financials, Vice 'n Versa

Google was uppity up about it's financials as they have beaten the market expectations.

Google reported $5.06 billion for the quarter, up 19 percent from last year. Net income for the quarter also were up at $1.96 billion, from $1.4 billion last year.

They were also happy about the financials of Nexus One, Google's own Android Phone, which is supposed to be leaving shelves at about 60,000 a day, which translates into about 92 million a year :). 60,000 activations of Nexus One a day is an achievement itself in today's saturated mobile market.
The Google Android Market (Android App Store) is growing too, AM now has about 38.000 apps. This is also a milestone as in last September it just passed 10,000 app mark. I guess app store wars are up!
But the good news was that Nexus One is making money and the project is in the black! Google almost were laughing at the nay sayers who thought and said, Nexus One is a flop!
I will be flopping to a Nexus One or better when my AT&T contract runs out on my iPhone 3G, unless iPhone 4G is so attractive AND available from another carrier!

Nexus One Gets WiFi Calling With Truphone Anywhere.

Truphone announced today that it has upgraded it's truphone for Android application to be compatible with Google's Nexus One, claiming to be the first mobile VoIP app to do so.

“Google has been very helpful in working with the Truphone team to allow us to provide our awardwinning solution to the growing number of Nexus One owners. Once again it is a testament to Truphone that we are the first to be able to offer this technology to consumers.” said the Director of Applications for Truphone, Karl Good.

Calls can be made outside of Wi-Fi using ‘Truphone Anywhere’ in 33 countries around the world, saving Android users from those countries money on international calls made from their home country. The easy-to-use service works alongside domestic service providers, but reduces international call costs to as little as £0.03/$0.06 [UK/RoW] per minute.
This could actually lower the total cost of ownership of Nexus One even further!

Lenovo's Android device slated to be released int he Chinese market some where during the first half of this year, is on the net now, at least photos. Lenovo spoke about the Lenovo LePhone during the CES 2010 last week but now have released official photos.

It seems very practical and slick like all Lenovo devices but for me it is Nexus One. Even if I wanted one, there is no news about when it will be availble to us, unless I move to China.

T-Mobile Network (3G and Edge) And Nexus One Woes, No Solution Yet

With people complaining about T-Mobile network fluctuations and in some cases no 3G on Google Nexus One and other phones like T-Mobile G1, it seems T-Mobile is investigating. A forum post indicated that they do not have a solution or a cause yet;

• Indicate if you have no 3G at all or if your signal indicator fluctuates between 3G & E. 
• Do you have another T-Mobile 3G phone that does get or does not get reliable 3G at the same location?
• Is there anything specific that you have done that helps the problem or that makes the problem occur.
• Any other relevant information you can provide.
