After our post "Reset Your iPhone To Factory Setting. (Low Level Format Your iPhone)" getting much attention, we have decided to add the complete iOS based iDevices to the list. So today I will start with resetting iPhone 3GS to Factory setting.

This time we are following a different but safer path. We will be using iTunes to reset the iPhone 3GS. Before going on this path, first make sure you have the latest version of iTunes installed and running on your computer, be it MAC, Windows or Linux (with wine and that is another article) before attempting to reset your iPhone 3GS to factory setting, once you are ready, Connect your iPhone 3GS to your computer.

Select your iPhone 3GS when it appears in iTunes under Devices.
Select the Summary tab.
Select the Restore option.
Select the Back Up option if you have not backed up the device recently.
Select the Restore option when iTunes prompts you if you have the device backed up.
Once the restore process has completed, the iPhone 3GS restarts and displays the Apple logo while starting up and then iPhone displays the "Connect to iTunes" screen. Keep your device connected until the "Connect to iTunes" screen goes away or you see "iPhone is activated."
If iTunes does not have an Internet connection, you cannot complete this step, so make sure that you are connected to the Internet.

Very important---If you want to preserve previous backups that iTunes has made, be sure to back up the appropriate directory before choosing to set up as new.
On a Mac: ~/Library/Application Support/MobileSync/Backup/
On Windows XP: \Documents and Settings\(username)\Application Data\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup\
On Windows Vista and Windows 7: \Users\(username)\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup\

The final step is to setup your iPhone 3GS as New, so select "setup as new" from the following menu;

and you are done. Enjoy, sell or give away your renewed iPhone 3GS.

iPad Sells 300,000 Units On Opening Weekend.

Even though I did not get an iPad over the weekend, there were plenty who did! According to Apple, the iPad sales that included retail iPad at Bestbuy and Apple Stores went over 300,000 units as of midnight Sunday the 4th March 2010..
The first iPhone was not able to sell that many units. But the third coming of the iPhone, iPhone 3GS managed to sell more than 1 million units over othe initial weekend.

"iPad users, on average, downloaded more than three apps and close to one book within hours of unpacking their new iPad." said Steve Jobs, speaking about opening of iPad sales.

Apple Hints On Increased "Air Freight" Costs In Holiday Season, But Not Related To iPhones.

Apple has mentioned increased "air freight" costs that are not related to iPhones in their 3rd quarter financials call,

“The air freight is not related to the iPhone so these are unrelated topics. But, generally speaking the air freight is planned to get enough units in to the channel in time for the holidays and is necessary for that reason.”

If it is not about iPhones, I wonder if Apple is planing to go against the norm and offer Apple Tablet for the holiday season. It also could be simply that by holiday season, Apple might be offering the iPhone 3GS in more markets.

PwnageTool 3.1.3 Now Supports iPhone 3GS iPod 2G For Updated!

iPhone Dev-Team has just posted a very long on the iPhone Dev-Team blog that the "iPhone 3GS is now supported in PwnageTool 3.1.3," but thesre is a caveat, you need to have pwaned at 3.0 or 3.0.1.  If your iPhone 3GS has 3.1 preinstalled and is not Pwned then you have to cross your fingers and wait.

The iPod Touch 2G is now supported in PwnageTool 3.1.3, assuming the iPod 2G was pwned at 3.0 or 3.0.1 - PwnageTool does not support the iPod 2G with 3.1 software out of the box nor iPod Touch 3G as of now..
They also expressed that;

GOLDEN RULE: If you are using a iPhone 3G or iPhone 3G(S) with ultrasn0w and rely on ultrasn0w to obtain cellular service then you should only update your device with an .ipsw that is made with the new PwnageTool. There are no second chances with this. You need to remember that PwnageTool will provide an upgrade path to newer versions of the iPhone software in the future.

They also mentioned that you should read the post and instructios at least twice before trying to update your phones. Ans ad of noe PwnageTool will work for the iPhone 3GS and the iPod touch 2G assuming you have already Pwned it at 3.0 or 3.0.1
The tool will also work for Original iPhone (1st Generation), the iPhone 3G and iPhone 3G(S) and the iPod touch (1st Generation and 2nd Generation) but NOT the iPod touch 3rd generation.
If you have pwned your phone already, rely on PwnageTool is your key to updating in the future, "just remember to never install an update directly from Apple", always use an .ipsw that has been created with PwnageTool.
For windows users,there will be no Windows version of PwnageTool. But if you have a machine with MAC OS X, you are in luck.

Read the description to identify your device, once you have correctly identified your device follow the specific instructions for that device as listed below.
SIM Free/SP Unlocked/Factory Unlocked iPhone 3G(S)
This applies if you bought your iPhone 3G(S) for $$$$$$$. This model of iPhone 3G(S) doesn’t have an Service Provider lock (aka factory unlocked) and you are able to put any SIM card into the phone and get service. Your phone is already unlocked so you do not need to worry about baseband updates, if your device was Pwned at 3.0 or 3.0.1 then you can use PwnageTool to create an ipsw and then use this to update and jailbreak your phone.

This applies if you bought your iPhone 3G for $$$$$$$. Use PwnageTool to create a firmware image and restore with that .ipsw using iTunes.
iPod Touch 2G
Use PwnageTool to create a firmware image and restore with that .ipsw using iTunes, this will only work if you are already Pwned at 3.0 or 3.1. If you are at 3.1, downgrade to 3.0 and use redsn0w to Pwn 3.0 then you have an upgrade path using PwnageTool.
iPod Touch 3G
At this time PwnageTool does not support this device.

AT&T's second-quarter revenues totaled $30.7 billion, net income attributable to AT&T was $3.2 billion, diluted earnings per share totaled $0.54 and cash from operating activities totaled $7.9 billion.

“Our wireless momentum is excellent, operational execution and cost management continue to be strong, and in a challenging economy we delivered solid results,” said Randall Stephenson, AT&T chairman and chief executive officer.

AT&T managed more than 2.4 million iPhone activations in the second quarter, reflecting a record-setting iPhone 3GS launch (Largest ever AT&T retail sales were the day of new iPhone 3GS launch), including iPhone, more than 3.5 million increase in 3G integrated devices in service boosting AT&T revenues.

The security related hacker, Jonathan Zdziarski has again got into an iPhone, through not quite a back door.
“It is kind of like storing all your secret messages right next to the secret decoder ring,” said Jonathan Zdziarski, an iPhone developer and a hacker who teaches forensics courses on recovering data from iPhones. “I don’t think any of us [developers] have ever seen encryption implemented so poorly before, which is why it’s hard to describe why it’s such a big threat to security.”

According to Zdziarski, the new iPhone 3GS is not much different from the previous incarnations of the iPhone, iPhone 3G and iPhone 1G, when it comes to security. The earlier iPhones did not have encryption like iPhone 3GS.
With commonly available tolls like Red Sn0w and Purple Ra1n, he was able to extract live data in two minutes and he has also mentioned that a entire disk image could be made in about 45 minutes. So if a knowledgeble person to get hold of an iPhone, all the business secrets as well as personal information could be gone in little as two minutes.

According to engadget and its reliable readers, Apple has released iPhone OS 3.1 Beta and iPhone 3.1 SDK to the iPhone Developer Community. I am beginning to wonder if there is something really wrong with iPhone OS 3.0. My iPhone 3G has hanged it self more times since the upgrade than it's entire life in my hand, which is closer to an year.
The iPhone battery management and WiFi drop offs even when sitting next to the wireless router are other reported errors, the former specially for the iPhone 3GS and the latter for both iPhones.

Either way the engadget discussion might get heated up and give us more information. They already have attached screen captures from improved video app for iPhone 3GS.

Should I get a iPhone 3GS?
I for one know that I will wait a while before I get an iPhone 3GS for various reasons and overheating iPhone 3GS is certainly one reason.
But looking at the all the features and benefits, I know it is good upgrade but considering the facts of price and the fact that I am happy with iPhone 3G, makes it "wait a while" for me.

Overheating iPhone 3GS? Make mine a Pink iPhone 3GS

There are reports all over the web that new iPhone 3GS could overheat and turn from pink to brown (the white iPhone 3GS).
The repeorts indicate that this happens when people use GPS, games and Browsing over the 3G as well as WiFi.
"Yesterday when the was placed on my desktop screen on it I noticed a mark intriguing back of my phone. It is reddish / pink and goes around the iPhone e following the shape of the battery ..." Le Jounal du Geek
When contacted, Apple have asked to send the phones in for testing by their engineers and I have not seen any official reaction to this. If the case is related to iPhone OS 3.0 as some points out (A user reported that after upgrading to the new OS 3.0, his / her iPod was getting hotter than usual.) may be fix is needed to manage the power. My old iPhone 3G, has been behaving normally, even after the upgrade. On the other hand, it is hard to turn black iPhone 3G in to a pink one.
Either way I hope this will get fixed soon and not lead to a bunch of exploding Phones.

Cost Of Building An iPhone 3GS,

iSuppli has done again the act of teardown analysis to come up with the new iPhone 3G S’s Bill of Materials (BOM) and and the cost to build an iPhone 3GS. It seems to be just $4.63 more than the previous estimate on the earlier 8GB iPhone 3G.

"The entry-level, 16Gbyte version of Apple Inc.’s new iPhone 3G S carries a BOM cost of $172.46 and a manufacturing expense of $6.50, for a total of $178.96," said Andrew Rassweiler, director and principal analyst, teardown services, for iSuppli. "This is slightly higher than iSuppli’s estimate of $174.33 for the original 8Gbyte iPhone 3G based on pricing in July 2008. Although the retail price of the 16Gbyte iPhone 3G S is $199, the same as for the 8Gbyte version of the original iPhone 3G, the actual price of the phone paid by the service provider is considerably higher, reflecting the common wireless industry practice of subsidizing the upfront cost of a mobile phone and then making a profit on subscriptions."

Charge Your iPhone/iPod Wirelessly With Wildcharge

Tom Keating at VoIP and Gadgets directed me to a useful gadget to be added my arsenal, WildCharge Adapter Skin for iPhone. I am the first one to misplace chargers and cables in the block, at least in the office and home. So this wireless charger seems to be a good gift for myself.
The WildCharge works across all the iPhones and I will be using it to charge my newly updated iPhone 3G (No iPhone 3GS yet).

Austrian Times reported that Maria Barbu, 17, had tried to plug in her laptop with wet hands after the battery died during a long session on social networking site Twitter as she took a soak at her home in Brasov, central Romania.
So what ever you do tweets or other stuff like facebook, try not to take computers to bath. Better take something like iPhone to the bath and that way you only kill the phone. What a way to get a new iPhone 3GS. On the other hand, check with your parents, after all they might kill you if you destroy a iPhone in these hard times.

I read at WSJ via Gizmodo that details about Android powered follow up to T-Mobile G1 will be released as early as next week.
Either by design or our creative capabilities, the phone, now known as T-Mobile myTouch G3, was also known and released as HTC Magic by Vodaphone. But we always liked the name Android G2, perhaps due to our alliance to Androids.
One way or another, we are going to have a hot phone summer, T-Mobile myTouch G3, iPhone 3Gs, Palm Pre and BlackBerry Tour.
