You will be able to do so if you a customer of USAA, a privately held bank/insurance company. The company is said to be modifying it's iPhone app so that customers take photos of both the sides of a check for deposits.
Once the iPhone Banking App sends the image(s) to the bank, you account will be credited for the amount of the check and you can void the check, for security reasons.
"“We’re essentially taking an image of the check, and once you hit the send button, that image is going into our deposit-taking system as any other check would,” said Wayne Peacock, a USAA executive vice president."
One step further but many behind from saving some trees. I always resort to electronic banking. it is much better.
