Alcatel OT-980 (Android 2.1)

Even thought engadget thinks it is cheesy, I could not find any cheese just by looking at it. Alcatel OT-980 seems to be like any other phone sans the highend ones and carries Android 2.1, full HSPA, WiFi, AGPS, compass, and a 2.8-inch display.
It will be released this year in non US markets.

Handoff Between WiMAX And LTE Might Be Possible In The Future With WiMAX and LTE Modem

WiMAX and LTE from a single chip, yes, they are that close. Beceem announced yesterday Mobile World Congress that they will work together with Motorola to pair off Motorola's 4G WiMAX infrastructure with BeceemsBCS500 4G chip.
The product will result in a 4G modem that will be able to handle LTE and WiMAX and provide users to roam and seemlessly switch between the two networks. Beceem chips currently power the Clearwire Networks and their capabilities already provide VoIP over WiMAX with multi-access network handoffs.

"The know-how gained during the development and deployment of our leading 4G WiMAX solution has contributed to our work with Beceem to offer this advanced chipset solution, We look forward to the opportunities provided by this capability to address market demand." said Bruce Brda, senior vice president, Motorola Enterprise Mobility Solutions and Networks business.

Zune Phone Coming Soon?

According to people in the know, Microsoft seems to be getting a Zune Phone ready for the upcoming MWC, Mobile World Congress. They also mentions that the project is a joint venture with Nvidia and the phone is based on Tegra platform and runs windows mobile 7 as the OS.
Among other multimedia offerings the phone will have 720P HD video and HDMI, and USB connections.

Android Developer Lab Coming To Mobile World Congress

Android developers will be treated to an special Android Developer Lab at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Spain on Wednesday the 17th February 2009, as a part of the APP Planet event.
The lab event will provide access to resources for every developer interested in developing applications for the Android Platform, from novices to established mobile developers.
There will be technical presentations and Android Team Members as well as other developer community members will be available to developers at developer lounge.
Space is limited and the MWC attendees are encouraged to sign up early to ensure a place in the sessions.
Android team is also providing a limited number of complementary passes to the App Planet event and you could request for a pass here.

The offering announced at Mobile World Congress is well on the way and even though the iPhone offering is slimer than the other smartphone offerings, is still a handful. According to Yahoo press release;

Skype Goes Native On Nokia!

Skype / Nokia announced that the next incarnation of Nokia N97 will have Skype integrated. I think iPhone should have been the one to announce that but I guess we have to do with Nokia for the moment!

Under the terms of the cooperation, Skype™ will be integrated into Nokia devices, starting with the Nokia Nseries. The Nokia N97 flagship device will be the first to incorporate the Skype experience in the 3rd quarter of 2009.

The Skype experience will be part of the address book of the Nokia N97, enabling presence - seeing when Skype contacts are online - as well as instant messaging. Android G2 (HTC Magic 3V) Revieved!

Gizmodo has done a hands on review of HTC Magic 3V also known as Android G2. Vodafone and HTC jointly announced the phone at Mobile World Congress. The phones details are below the video. Gizmodo's Jesus Diaz had this to say about the phone;
"Overall, the first feeling is that we got a potential winner here. If they can manage to make the software keyboard better, Apple will definitely have a formidable enemy in the Android G2."

HTC Magic 3V (Android G2) Officially Announced

Vodafone has announced HTC Magic 3V (Android G2) officially at the mobile world congress. It is the same HTC phone that was suspected to be the Android G2. Gizmodo has already reviewed the phone and we will post about that in another post.
From various sources, the phone is a few steps up from the Android based G1 but with some quirks of it's own. The main complain seem to be the cramped up soft keyboard. But everyone agrees that it is a much better phone than the Android G1.

Garmin-Asus Introduces Nüvifone™ M20, WinMo 6.1 GPS Phone.

Asus in collaboration with Garmin has come up with a new Windows Mobile 6.1 based GPS phone that seem to interest a lot of people. Pricing, carriers and release might be announced at the Mobile World Congress, which starts on Monday.
Nuvifone M20 is a GSM-based phone with HSDPA data capability and also provides wi-fi and Bluetooth like any respectable mobile phone these days.
The GPS service is not tied to the phone service and the GPS service will be available even when you are in a mountain valley where there is no phone single, just like a stand alone GPS unit. The device carries 1GB worth of natonal navigational data with Nuvi Navigator and you can certainly add more as the phone itself has 4/8GB memory and the capability to add a micro SD card as well.
You might need that as the phone also has a 3MP camera which automatically Geotag the photos you take.

LG Arena KM900, May Make You Be Seen!

The phone will be available in March and is a very impressive phone with many a features. The KM900 is a multimedia touch screen phone with a brushed metal case is promoting a 3D user interface, according to the brochure. The phone also carries a 5MP camera and also capable of making DVD quality videos easily. LG Arena KM900 is equipped with A-GPS and WiFi like many newer phones.

Acer SmartPhone To Be Unveiled At Mobile World Congress.

Acer has sent and invite to Pocket lint attend an event that will be held in Barcelona at Mobile World Congress. They will be introducing Acer smartphone/s by Acer and from what I know of Acer, it could very well be a Linux based phone which leads us to think that it will be an Android based phone. Android Acer with black and white tones, perhasps an undistilled version of DSTL1?
According to the invite Gianfranco Lanci, Acer's president and CEO, will speak at "smartphones launch - Acer press conference".
