Dual failures, one related to a power failure at a datacenter and the other a pure DDoS attack on Ooma's corporate site, kept Ooma users without a service and without a way to look up what is the matter with the service.
Even though Ooma says it was a DDoS attack, it could be all the Ooma customers trying to access the corporate may have caused what is explained as a DDoS attack. For phone company, actually a VoIP company a 3 hour outage might be bigger than AT&T neighbor digging out a trench cutting a cable and causing a six hour outage.. Because AT&T cable cut will be localized issue while Ooma's VoIP trouble was or will be widespread from east coast to west coast and the publicity even larger. Also every Ooma customer are on the internet and the first thing they will do is try and access Ooma site to find a solution to trouble. So simply it looks like Ooma was not ready or at least did not expect a bigger portion of their customers coming to their site.
But to have your at a data center with dubious backup power system is Ooma's fault. Having a website that is not capable to handle few thousand user rush is also a fault of Ooma. So I think Ooma should invest a bit on hosting their web site as well as VoIP servers. Scalability is the word Ooma. Because customers want continuous service, not an explanation about how the service failed.
I too did have a rush of people coming over to this humble blog, because we wrote about an earlier Ooma failure or an issue. "Ooma Phone Service Goes Down And Up" people looking for a solution for Ooma clout failure were ended up coming here.

For those who are adventures, Tom at PBX in a Flash has put together PIAF 1.7.5.6.3 ISO with the new Asterisk 10 incorporated. @NerdUno informed us.
There were some issues with FLITE and Cepstral TTS but Wardmundy later told us that Cepstral TTS has been fixed by Darren Sessions from Digium.
If you are wondering about Asterisk 10 it is the new versioning system adapted by Digium. What was to be Asterisk 1.10 became Asterisk 10.

Avaya, the Basking Ridge, N.J.-based provider of VoIP IP Telephony software and equipment on Thursday filed with the SEC for a $1 billion stock
Avaya was spun out of then a market leader Lucent Technologies in 2000. After seven years continuous pressure to stay in the market and challenge other leaders of the trade, got bought out by private equity firm Silver Lake Partners and TPG Capital for more than $8 billion.
In the S-1 filling the company said it will use the proceeds to pay off the long term debt. As of March 31st company owed as much as $6.18 billion.
The monies will also be used to redeem preferred stock, and pay expenses due the termination of a management agreement with Silver and TPG. Avaya also disclosed a loss of $615 million, or $1.26 a share, for the six months ended March 31 on revenue of $2.76 billion in the filing.

I am a long time LogMeIn user, both Pro and Free version. I also have LogMeIn on my iPhone and to date, it is one of most expensive apps in my collection.
Join.me is a free screen sharing service by LogMeIn and has been around for a while, well since October, 2010 and has been a popular way to share screens. But if people needed to talk, they had to use their own phones during these sessions, up until now.
The join.me apps have been updated with VoIP option that lets users listen or participate in online meetings or screen-sharing sessions. join.me Web service, the iPad and iPhone viewer app are all free and does not require registration. Flying With GOGO

I will be testing the GOGO service this week as I have planned to fly a bit this month. Last month I was mostly grounded except for a short flights to LA.
But VoIP Watch beat me to it and tested the service and I trust Andy's words, I think I will be just using it, instead of testing (He also wrote earlier about in flight VoIP and manners);

Here's the net net. The peace of mind, knowing I can be in touch vs. out of touch makes the $5.95 cost for GoGo on a short hop a pleasure. Add to that the in-seat power keeps my Air nice and charged, ready for a morning of breakfast, some fresh air and a view of the Bay from where I will be most of the day working away before meeting up with friends in SF.

AT&T has quietly revised its wireless plans to ban you from using video or audio from a fixed location or downloading movies, web broadcasting, telemetry and data acquisition (Photographs of Bar codes or simply photographs?)
Glad I did not see VoIP in the list.
Basically they are changing the plan you agreed to! So if you are sick with these and want to go to another carrier to get sick again, may be it is time to terminate the contract as terms have changed without informing the users directly. I am not a lawyer so better get in touch with one or your consumer advocate in your area before terminating the contract.

Skype For SIP Goes Beta
Skype For SIPSkype opened up Skype For SIP Beta today and I think this will propel Skype much forward in the small and medium business world, if they are already not using the Skype. Perhaps this is a good follow up for Skype Opening up the SILK Speech Codec. I think Skype is waking up from it's long slumber.
According to Skype, Skype For SIP provides business with;

Another thought for Asterisk users is the Asterisk For Skype (SFA) (which entered second beta tests) that is also on the way. But I think the VoIP is on the way to integrate and share like WWW. Good move Skype. I know a few companies that will register, because I already emailed and asked them to.

When I first saw their video camera, Mino HD, I was surprised at the price but later realized that the product did what I wanted for it's price. I used it as a hidef webcam.

AT&T LTE Coming In 2011

Long Term Evolution (LTE) network will be complete and ready in 2011 according to statements made by AT&T at the mobile world congress. LTE is theoretically much faster in downloads than HSPA+, at about 100Mbps, and has lower latency that should make multiplayer games, VoIP and two-way video calling more practical than on current 3G. My own 3G speed tests have been somewhat surprising and above average.

New T-Mobile G1 Gets A 3.5mm Headphone Adapter

People who bought the G1 already, do not seem to have the chance of getting or buying one according to some posts and comments on the net. But this new head phone adapter allows you to listen to music that you bought at Amazon with your favorite headset or plug the phone into your cars aux port.

I am happy about not buying one even though it was not simply because of headphones. VoIP, Battery life and perhaps because of all inclusive accounts I have from Sprint and AT&T. Even though now you CAN get VoIP on your G1, I will still not buy T-Mobile G1! I am looking for the next Android though!

No iPhone VoIP In Germany!
A German court has out lawed the VoIP application Sipgate, on iPhone. Sipgate allows users to make VoIP calls when they are on a wireless network by passing the carriers expensive voice lines. According to Cellular News, Higher Regional Court of Hamburg favored of T-Mobile, iPhone's exclusive carrier in Germany, against Sipgate. T-Mobile filled suit saying that Sipgate had used "unfair business practices" in order to attract customers, who are tied to T-Mobile for voice calls. What a way to curb iPhone sales.
